Default Start Issue

I have an 2001 PT Cruiser that had intermittent start issues, I used to have to remove the positive post from the battery and reconnect to get it started as the computer was bad. I replaced the computer and then received a error code 0340 to replace the cam shaft sensor, so I did and the cruiser started with no problems however the same error code has returned and the cruiser is not starting again. ???

You need to reset the engine trouble codes with an OBDII Tool Scan. Disconnecting the battery will not remove the diagnostic trouble codes.

After resetting the code if it comes back I would suggest checking the wire harness from the Camshaft and Crankshaft sensor to the PCM. On the 2001 & 2002 PT Cruisers there is a wire clip that holds this wire harness up underneath the engine and sometimes it breaks and the wire harness drops down to the half shaft. The half shaft rubs through the wire harness and burns the wires apart.

i agree on checking the wiring abve the axle. option 2 is that the sensor he bought was not from the dealer. where was it from?

i had previously disconnected my cam sensor just to see if the car would start. it did not. after reconnecting it and driving as usual, 60 miles a day, the p0340 remained after over a month, but i cleared it without a scanner by disconnecting the battery and stepping on the brake and then verified it was gone by using the key dance

Thanks for the quick response. i bought the camshaft sensor from Advance Auto and it worked originally, meaning after replacing the car started and ran for a month before it started its intermittent to no start issue.

Check if there was a warranty on the sensor from advance auto. Probably not but won't cost anything other than gas to get there and back.

Check the wire harness underneath the engine. This is a common problem.

If the wire harness is okay I would remove the camshaft sensor and make sure the camshaft is turning when you crank the engine over.
