First thing to try is calling your insurance if you have full coverage. State farm changed the one on our minivan free.

In 3 year I have had 2 windshields. In my area they are 1st was 145 installed but was low quality glass. the second I request a specific glass and it was only 175 installed.

You must look for yourself in YOUR area what they cost. It seems every where is different and there is NO real set standards for replacement costs.

Try Criagslist first if you have it in your area?

Wow! Did not know it was allowed to put low quality glass windshields on cars. Can you tell us more about what quality glass to put on the PT Cruisers and is there a way to verify the quality of the glass?

If you carry windshield replacement insurance, any of the major franchise's will fill the bill. I had SOOO BIG's windshield replaced under insurance coverage at the Daytona GLASS DOCTOR. They're set up to do it on site where you are, or at their shop. My receipt doesn't show the cost as it was insurance paid, but I'm guessing no more the $150.00 to $200.00. The installation was very professional. After the job was done, there wasn't apparent evidence that SOOO BIG had a rock hit his windshield. The seals, rubber and glass looked as good as new.
An alternative, if your doin' it out of pocket, is to find a salvage yard that has a good used one. Let your fingers do the walkin'. Most yards usually have someone of expertise standing by who'll come by and install it at the yard. This might be a lot cheaper than a new one. Good luck. Happy PTin', ptprice

There is a misunderstanding about windshield glass. YES there is different quality glass and YES most that get replacements get LOW QUALITY GLASS WINDSHIELDS.

I did a write up for a magazine I will see if I can find it and post it? It was about 10 years ago.

Basically if you look carefully at OEM windshields that have not been replaced and compare to a replacement you will soon see lots of BIG differences.

The two things I really hate is harder glass and wave. The harder the glass the more small sand pits will appear in a short time. Wave sucks for the OCD part of my personality because when I look out I do not like to see distorted objects. You will see this along high angle area's of a windshield.

So when you get a price on windshield ask for the prices of all the livable glass they have and not what they want to sell you which is their highest profit glass. There is lots of room for negotiating.

Good to know! This might change my attitude about thinking twice before changing windshields when they crack. I had replaced one on one of my previous vehicles and it cracked 3 months after I replaced it. This information that you have posted will help other members not to have to replace their windshields again if it is caused by low quality glass as long as they follow your advice as I will.

I have not had to replace the windshield on my own cars very often but when I had to I always went to AGS. When I had the body shop going a lot of people would go to the local junk yard and get a windshield and have me put it in.

If I could convince them to go with AGS instead it would cost them a bit more but they got a brand new hunk of glass professionally installed, with a warrantee, instead of a used one installed by me.

AGS used to be Auto Glass Specialists but if you do a internet search you will find places that have nothing to do with glass at all. Around here all the AGS places are now called Safelite Auto Glass but that does not matter much.

Depending on just how bad the crack is they may be able to fix the original glass.

My niece had the windshield in her Focus fixed by them around two years ago and I can not see where the original spot or any of the cracks that radiated from it are even with the picture she took for her insurance company.

Her Focus was her very first new car and only around two months old when the windshield got cracked. This meant she had full coverage insurance on it {with GEICO which turned out to be problems in its own right} but the windshield repair worked out to be very good

Hate to pop your bubble but AGS has a few quality level windshields. LOL
And not to be insulting but if you cant see a repaired chip then you cant really see what I am talking about in this thread either. Those repairs are more HYPE then fix. I won't get into the money they make or save by doing the glue repair on your windshield. LOL
BTW CRACKS in the glass are not suppose to be repaired only "CHIPS". And only a specif maximum size and depth chip should be repaired.

I have never been in a *"used" vehicle that the windshield did need to be replaced. I have personally owned over 150 plus cars alone. Not that I changed all those windshield just saying.

Most people as an example rarely change their wiper blades EVERY season or when they start to show a wiping issue. I change mine often. Wiper are cheap and easy to replace. Wiper **cause a pattern to wear into the glass that eventually changes the clarity and reflective angles of direct or reflected light through the glass.l

I also hand clean my windshield when it starts to get dusty. This is several times a week in any of my vehicles. Most don't and the **dirt act like sandpaper on the glass.

IMHO it is ridicules to junk yard Shields shop? In this day and time it makes no sense? Maybe for a rare no longer available windshield or screen? But then you would be shopping a collectors shop and not really a junk yard for those anymore anyway?

*used would be in this example 3 or more years old, one that had 30K+miles or one that lived in a high dust area.
