Default muffler rotten, will a straight pipe be ok

Muffler is rotten on my 02 PT. Thinking on replacing it with a straight pipe. Just wondering if it will be loud or just mellow considering the long and twisted pipe coming from the cat.

Just answered my question I youtube and this what I found, I will be installing a muffler

That video is a GT with a turbocharger. Your 2002 will not sound the same as this.

Here's a 2001 non-turbo similar to your 2002 with no muffler. It sounds pretty mellow:

And here's another either 2001 or 2002 with a straight pipe.

When I bought my MGB it had a pretty expensive polished stainless steel exhaust on it. It started with a split header then went back to two pipes that exited on the drivers side.

There was no catalytic converter or mufflers at all.

I did kinda like the cackle the pipes made but it was a real headache to drive it anywhere.

I was able to sell the stainless steel system for more than enough to buy a 'stock' exhaust system from Moss motors. With the stock setup driving the 'roller skate' became more of a pleasure for me.

In my youth I built a few vehicles that had loud exhaust. As time passed I started to like the idea of being able to sneak up on folks so mufflers became part of my life.
