Default Clunk/Ping Sound When Starting Off

2006 PT non-turbo.
For a little while now I hear a clunking, loud metallic ping sound when starting off.
It does not always happen.
Usually just when I start off driving.
It happens both in forward and reverse.
It will make one or two clunks and then the rest of the drive will be fine.
Sometimes I think it sounds like the brakes are sticking and suddenly release.
It doesn't only happen when shifting from park to drive or reverse.
When I apply the brakes in reverse, going up a moderate slope and then continue in reverse it sometimes makes the noise too.

What I have done so far:

1- I inspected under the car, nothing is hanging or loose.
2- I changed the front brake pads and rotors and a caliper 2 weeks ago.
3- I changed a broken sway bar link last week
4- I changed a ripped lower torque strut today.
5- The sway bar bushings look fine
6- Nothing seems broken or out of place on the lower control arms.

Any one have an idea what the problem might be?
Any input is always appreciated.

This is going to be hard to diagnose. I would suggest opening up the hood, have someone else shift from park to drive to reverse and back to drive and see if you can find where the clunking is coming from. I would suggest checking the upper torque strut, the center motor mount, and the transmission mount to see if they are loose. One of the mounts could be loose but jammed in after going back and fourth a couple of times.

Was the clunking there before replacing the brake pads and front caliper? Why was the caliper replaced?

If all the mounts are good I would check the back brakes to see if you might have something loose there. You should be able to narrow it down when you locate where the clucking is coming from.

Thanks for the answer.

You make some very good suggestions and I will follow up on them.
I know the upper torque strut is in good shape but I will look at the other mounts as well.
The clunking was there before the brakes were replaced.
I replaced the caliper because it was leaking from the piston boot.
I recently did an inspection and adjustment on the rear drum brake on the drivers side.
This week I will do the same on the passenger side.

Thanks again for your help.

Look again under the car and check around bushings and joints and look for rust marks around bushings and moving parts. Look for torn boots around the ball joints. Of course check the engine and trans mounts.

I have a clunk when taking off and I and my mechanic can't find it. Not that bad so waiting for it to show some day.

Thanks for the answer

I am going to have some winter tires put on it tomorrow.
When it's on the lift I am going to give it the once over.

I will check back in if I find anything.

Went to the garage today to put on the winter tires.
The mechanic and I tested it out on the lift and the clunk is coming from the area around the upper torque strut, although the strut itself looks to be in good condition.

I am going to pull the strut when I have some time and make sure there is nothing wrong with it or the bolts or mounts that hold it in place.
It's a big job because then I have to mess around with the lower strut to re-balance everything.
However, it will also give me a chance to peek below the strut and make sure nothing is going on between the upper and lower struts.

On the bright side, my mechanic charged me nothing for his time.
Good mechanic I got!

I will check back in with the results in the near future.
Thanks again to all for your help.
