Exclamation Misfire Codes P0303 and P0304

Hello fellow Cruisers, my name is Amy and I am new member. I have a 2006 PT Touring Edition automatic transmission, odo @ 111K. I've read numerous threads on this site about the issues and codes my PT has been populating. Latest codes that were pulled were P0303, P0304 and also P0340 (Camshaft Position Sensor). Rough idle and misfire can be heard.

Car was in a running conditon 1 month ago, today. I was driving up a grade and check engine light came on and began blinking. Car was struggling and I could feel there was a strain on the engine as I pulled off of the freeway. Instantly knew there was a misfire present. Had to get towed home.

I've replaced:
Last Friday: PCM with Mopar PCM which was programmed by dealership. (There were two pages of codes found on old PCM!)

Last night:
-Camshaft and Crankshaft Sensors, both of which are aftermarket.
-Knock Sensor
-2 Spark Plugs

I also purchased a coil pack but current one seems to be working according to my husband. I plan on purchasing an OEM Camshaft Position Sensor to replace the new aftermarket one that was installed a few days ago.

Last night while removing the intake manifold we noticed white smoke coming out of all four holes. This was after running the car for 3-5 minutes to yank on each of the spark plugs to see if there was a difference.

After replacing spark plugs, three sensors and PCM there is still a misfire present. Tried doing the key jig and dance and no codes came up last night. Just shows "-done-".

I've been feeling like this may be a burnt or cracked valve...and have been wanting to do a compression check.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum!

Have you had the timing belt work done, if not, your PT is due for it, and may be related to your latest symptoms.

Vapor coming back up from cylinders is not unusual.

Compression test is the right next step. Often it should be the first step.

Lots of maybe questionable parts being replaced.

By replacing so many parts that may not have been the original cause of the problem you may have created more problems compounded by the original?

Clear all codes and also check readiness area of PCM with scan tool. Start run engine and re check after about 10 minutes of driving or when engine light first appears. Get Vacuum reading which may need to be followed up with a cylinder Compression check followed by a leak down.

BTW you can not get plug reading from an idling engine. The proper way for plug reading is a power shut down and pull.

Bought car from used car dealership 2 years ago. Just got off the phone with dealership and their estimate is $1,400 to replace the timing belt.

Unfortunately, I don't intend on spending over $1,000 for the car...

That might be a little high, but about in line for a dealership replacement.

I was insisting on a doing a compression test as soon as I got the car back into the drive way.

The smoke was coming out of chambers in the intake manifold (red rags in photo). Excuse my ignorance if the cylinders are directly connected to the intake valves. Learning as I go.
