Default p0016, p0340, & p0344 4

Hey guys, I haven't found any other forums withthis. On Black Friday, my w for wanted to do some sales. We head over to kmart, got a deal, and jumped into the cruiser, turned the key and nothing. I had a buddy go e me a jump and I figured it must have been the alternator since the battery was replaced during the summer.

I went to Autozone to have it checked, and while there we all noticed i desperately needed motor mounts again. So, this time I decided to get the set motor mounts. Got it all installed thanks to searching this forum, it was a peice of cake.

And then the next day I get the engine codes p0016, p0340 0, and p0344. The car is shaking Vigorously and driving horribly. I was planning on replacing the cam sensor tomorrow. Any other suggestions?

Is P0334 actually P0344 camshaft sensor issue?

P0016 Crankshaft/Camshaft Timing Misalignment

Possible Causes:
1. The camshaft timing is not correct
2. Intermittent condition Crankshaft or Camshaft Sensor signal
3. Tone wheel or pulse wheel is damaged or contains debris
4. Crankshaft or Camshaft Sensor, harness or connector has failed
5. PCM has failed

P0330 Knock Sensor

Possible Causes:
1. Knock Sensor No. 2 signal circuit shorted to battery voltage or to KS 2 return circuit
2. Knock Sensor No. 2 signal circuit or return circuit is open
3. Knock Sensor No. 2 signal circuit is shorted to KS 2 return circuit or to ground Knock Sensor damaged or has failed
4. PCM has failed

how many miles do you have on the PT Cruiser?
I would suggest resetting the DTC's and see if the same codes come back again.

Ah, you were right, I did write down the wrong codes. It was p0016, p0344, and p0340. sorry, I am using new rablrt and getting used to a new keyboard. I didn't even realize I did that.

the pt is a 05 touring with 124k. I did disconnect, clean, wait, and reconnect battery, but the problem came back.

Has the timing belt been replaced on this engine?

've been getting P0334 intermittently for the past year or so with no drive-ability problems or symptoms. Light was on 90% of the time.
To day I changed the cam sensor and magnet and the light went out on the third drive cycle.
03 NA 130,000. belt changed at 118,000

I changed the belt a few years ago, at about 110k.

I was planning on doing the sensor today, so I think I will take your advice and doth magnet as well.

Thanks for the input

Edit: I was looking at pepboys, and i see both a camshaft position sensor and a camshaft crankshaft position sensor. Also, I can't find the magnet itself. Any guess which one I should get? Are the magnets built.in the ones from.pepboys (sorry, niethrr my phone or tablet is working right to link it.)

I'd go to the dealer for that. Shouldn't be expensive.

I went through a lot of posts on this forum about the camshaft sensor target magnet going back to 2003 and found that most of them had wiring or timing belt issues along with the DTC's for camshaft sensor. Found some posts where metal shavings were found on the target magnet. On other posts found where the members had over torqued the target magnet installing it and cracked it. On some other forums the only thing I found was to remove the target magnet and inspect it for cracks. If no cracks are found put the target magnet back in. I have found no posts on this forum so far that absolutely proved that the target magnet was bad.

If you still plan to replace the target magnet leave the original camshaft sensor and see if the DTC's go away. JoeX posted he replaced both camshaft sensor and magnet so the question is whether it was the camshaft sensor or target magnet? Make sure you don't over tighten the target magnet when installing it.

I really wish I saw this before I did the work. Now, I'm stuck till Monday when the dodge dealer opens.

I went ahead and switched them both, and still have 344 and in limp mode. I think I'll try switching the sensor with the old one and see if it'll work.

P0344 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent

Possible Causes:

1. Wiring harness fault 5v supply circuit open or shorted to ground
2. Tone wheel/pulse ring is damaged or corroded
3. Camshaft Sensor has failed
4. Camshaft Sensor signal circuit is open, shorted to ground or battery voltage or 5v supply
5. Camshaft Sensor ground circuit is open
6. PCM has failed

I would suggest checking the wiring from the camshaft sensor to the PCM.
I would also check the ground wires going to the drivers side fender well. Make sure they are all making good contact.
