Default Battery Light Intermittently comes on.

I have a 2006 basic pt cruiser. The battery lights come on when you first start it in the morning. Sometimes when I'm driving, make a u-turn or the battery light doesn't come on for a couple of days. I wanted to take it on a long trip to see my family on Christmas but I'm scared to drive it there.

Also, when you turn it off. The battery light will go off and won't come back on until it has sat all day. It usually will come on once and that's it until the next fresh start.

It has never stopped working. The battery light just comes on.

So far I have checked:

1.Mechanic told me it was a bad battery so I swapped batteries with boyfriend. His battery is a couple of months old. Problem still persist.
2. Had original battery checked. Was told the battery was good, then had it checked again and autozone said it had a bad cell.
3. Battery, alternator and starter checked and was told they were good at autozone.
4. 1 terminal connection was loose. Replaced terminal. Checked terminal battery connections. All connections tight. Problem still persisted.
5. Took it to another mechanic, he tested the battery with a machine and said the battery was being drained, this was after my boyfriend put his new battery in my car. Alternator was 14.57 so he said it was good.

Took, it to the dealership. Was told they would need to keep it a couple of days to see what's wrong with it. Even if the battery light came on for them it would still be hard to narrow down the problems source. 98$ is a lot to spend on a diagnostic and they may still not know what's wrong with it. Anyone experienced this problem. I'm at a loss.

Also, when I'm at a standstill sometimes. The motors sounds like it's dropping down and then revs back up. Strange.

Check the ground wires behind the air box on the drivers side. Just don't look at them, pull them off to check for corrosion or broken wires.

the alternator belt might need to be tightened up a bit.

Does your 2006 Pt Cruiser have the TIPM? What date does it have on the drivers side door?

I had my boyfriend check the alternator belt and he said it was tight. The battery connectors were good as well. The date for the vehicle is 07/06. Thank you for any help. It is appreciated.

I would suggesting looking around for any added on systems, radio, radio amps etc.. and disconnect them.

Is there anything that has been added lately to the Pt Cruiser?

Is there anything that is left on after you turn off the ignition switch.

When I bought my 06 the alternator was bad along with the TIPM and PCM.
The long time friend that has fixed starers and alternators for the past several decades said he cannot get the parts to repair it but took it apart and found a wire buried in epoxy that had burned apart, he put a short jumper in and it fixed the alternator. I got a backup at the recycle yard for $35.00

Unfortunately, I haven't added anything to this vehicle. I shouldn't have purchased it. I wish I could return it. I just replaced the motor mounts. You would think Chrysler would have recalled the tipm for pt cruisers. Never again will I buy this type of car.

Rant over, sorry.

Is there a way to know if I have tipm or the tcm. Do I have both?

06 PT Cruiser with TIPM do not have a fuse box on the lower left dash panel by the drivers door

I had the same feelings toward my 06, it was enjoyable wile it was running.

Since you have checked the battery connections and claim they are clean its a good bet that the alternator is having a problem. I would check the cluster of ground wires on the passengers side inner fender well.

Its simple enough to unbolt them and clean them up if need be.

Then I would take the alternator out of the car and have it tested. Most auto parts stores will do this for free.

If it is not working correctly that would be a good time to replace it. I have been lucky with junkyard alternators. The local U Pull A Part place has them for $35.00 but you have to go take it off the car. They used to have some in the building but not the last few times I needed one. I always take them to the nearest AutoZone to have them tested when I pull one.

Its not that hard to tear one down and rebuild it, its just that getting a rebuild kit for them is very hard these days.

I got a rebuilt one for my '06 Neon from a vendor on eBay for $99.00 last summer so they are available for a fairly cheap price.

Since you have an '06 it might be a good time to replace the alternator anyway. A new battery might be a good investment too.
