Default I need to replace the gas filter. What should I buy exactly

Hi there!

My mechanic explained me that I cannot change the gas filter by itself. Instead, I need to change the whole gas pump module.

But when I visit the auto part websites to look for the gas pump module (Autozone, O'Reilly's, etc.) I see a lot of results and I am not quite sure what to buy.

So if you don't mind, could you please show me a link to the proper part that I need to buy? Thank you so much!!

How does your mechanic know the gas filter is clogged?

131,000 and never changed "FUEL FILTER" I believe it a screen on the end of the fuel pickup.. Far from a filter.

It is a fuel pump screen and can be replaced but then you may as well change the pump while you are there.

The screens rarely get so dirty that they need replacing and if they did your pump was probably on the verge of failing anyway?

As I have often said in the case where a "mechanic" is giving this kind of advise specifically about a PT Cruiser it is time to shop for a better mechanic or Auto Technician.

Thank you so much for your replies.

My mechanic suspects that the gas filter needs to be replaced because the car "shakes" especially after pumping gas. In addition to that, there is usually a strong gas smell after driving the car for a few miles. Some other times, when I stop at a light, the car seems like it will stop, and my mechanic explained me that maybe the gas isn't getting pumped properly.

It is just a suspicion he has. The car has 152K miles and I've been reading that the gas filter can last for years...

Are you the original owner to the vehicle? Do you frequently run your tank nearly empty before refilling? If so, that is not a good thing as the in-tank fuel pump uses the fuel as a coolant. There are some pressure and flow tests your mechanic can perform. But if it is a fuel pump issue, either way the tank has to be dropped, and if you do that, you might as well replace the pump rather than try any kind of repair to the existing, especially with the number of mIles your PT has.

The smell of fuel is and should be the focus of concern.

There may be an added later inline fuel filter, check the line to see if you find one.

My PT GT does have a added inline fuel filter that I had to change. I don't think it came on the car when it was new.

I wonder how old your car might be now. There is a chance the fuel line and the return line are rusted, that happened on my HHR so I replaced them with fuel injection rated rubber hoses.

The electric fuel pump runs at around 50 pounds of pressure so if there is a leak anywhere it can cause problems. You mentioned the smell of gas and that's what got me thinking about the fuel line leaking.

Two things come to mind. That metal thing at the firewall. That sometimes goes bad and leaks gas. Or guilty injectors stuck open. The smell and other symptoms. Try some Berrymans cemtool B 12 good stuff for a good price. Or you need to replace the line if it's leaking at the fireball. if you smell gas, you need to deal with that first. Chances are all are related. And it's not the filter. Good call Lynn.

I would suggest checking the gas cap. It might be leaking after it gets pressurized. Does your engine light come on?

If its not your gas cap I would physically check the fuel line from the engine to the fuel tank with the engine running. Have an fire extinguisher ready for an emergency.
