Default New here, with a question.

Last week, our secondary vehicle (2011 GMC Terrain) was totaled in an accident, and we need to get another 2nd vehicle. My wife's Aunt has a PT Cruiser (her second one) that she is selling. She wants $6000 for it and (though I forgot to ask her the year of it) it only has 27K miles on it. I've known her to take very good care of her vehicles; following proper maintenance procedures on time, every time. She would have kept the PT, but her husband (who was dying) wanted her to keep HIS vehicle (a GMC Denali) solely on the strength of it being a bit younger than her PT. I will find out what year it is, as well as if it is the Turbo version.

I've read of their being characteristic issues with the PT Cruiser, but I believe that there may be issues with ALL makes and models of vehicles. My question is this: might it be worth it for me to take a gamble on her PT, what with her history of upkeep, coupled with the low mileage on that car?

Advanced thanks for replies.

Nathan

Find out what year the PT is and get back to us. Price isn't bad if it's the last couple years of the PT 2008-2010. Any older and it has to be in really excellent shape. It does have the low mileage going in it's favor.

Crewzin,

I, literally, just got off the phone with her. She isn't sure as to whether the PT has that Turbo feature, but she's informed me that it's year is 2009. I am about to head to Niagsra Falls (where she lives) now. I live in Amherst, NY, which is only about a half hour away. I'm going to take it for a test drive and, maybe, find out about that Turbo.

Look at the right rear of the hatch. If it's a turbo, it'll say so right there.

That's what I had thought. At least, that it would have been so noted on the car's exterior, somewhere. However, I just recently returned from Niagsra Falls, and was able to conclude that it did NOT feature the Turbo mode. Should I allow that to factor into the lack of it being a deal breaker, though? I really don't know much, at all, about the PT Cruisers, which is why I am asking.

I know that she's taken a few lengthy trips, with that car, which had her traveling over mountainous regions. She told me that she never, even once, had issue keeping up with traffic, even on very hilly road grades.

I am particularly drawn to that car owing to the fact that she bought it new, and because of knowing that she treated it with kid gloves. I've been informed that she's only held two gripes with the car. One, is that the car is so light that it doesn't fare too well in some snowy conditions. The other has to do with her tires, oftentimes, running low on air. The attributable factor, there, is with the aluminum wheels (I had the same issue with the wheels and tires on my former Ford Expedition). I am REALLY considering purchasing this car and, hopefully, finding a set of steel wheels to replace those aluminum ones. And what about a few sandbags, placed in the car's trunk, to help improve traction.

By the way, I didn't get the chance to drive it because it turned out that time was a bit tight. But that will take place on the next time that get up there - which will be very soon.

Please let me know your thoughts. And I hope that they will be favorable .

Many, many DEEP thanks for stepping in to help me out.

Nathan

I think there were only about 18,000 PTs produced in 2009. Very few (less than 500?) were Turbos, as Chrysler was then phasing out the car, and shifted the build to an increased number of 'base' models. The 180hp turbo was only available as an option on the Limited in 2009. It will have a tiny "2.4T' on the rear lift hatch, plus big letters that spell "2.4L TURBO" on the top of engine. You can go to various car review sites and spend all night reading reviews and owners comments. $6000 seems like a very good price....

the 2nd gen cruisers in my opinion are not good... the deal breaker for me is the electronically activated rear hatch lift. you can't open the lift gate in an emergency if the battery fails. who ever the engineer was who okay'd that feature needs to have his ass whooped
chuzz likes this.
