Smile Time for a New ECU?

I have a 2002 LTD Cruiser with 178,000, I'm not the original owner, but have had the car for about 3 years. I live in California, where we have to have smog checks. Upon purchasing the car it passed the smog check. This time it didn't pass the smog check because not enough monitors were ready to diagnosed. I went to 3 different shops, including the dealer, only to have everyone tell me I needed to keep driving the car, go through various drive cycles, eventually the car would be ready to monitor.

That's been about 3 months ago, still not ready to monitor. I paid $95 to a 'Drive Cycle Whisperer' who was supposed to be able to fix everything. After driving and throwing a diagnostic tool on he said the problem was in my ECU. It wasn't storing information after the car was turned off. I needed a new ECU they could get one for $675 then flash it to my VIN number.

Before I spend that kind of money I looked at the services on Ebay where you provide your VIN, they send you an ECU already flashed to your car for less than $200. I read some posts that ECU's for cars my age should be changed out.

I am going to go the Ebay route, but decided I would try resetting the ECU first to see what would happen. Upon resetting the ECU a previous issue I had with overheating has returned and I bought a OBD II reader and can see that as I drive some monitors are ready, then after driving again, different monitors are not ready. They keep changing. The last 2 monitors which never get ready are EVAP and O2 Sensor Heater.

Does any of this sound like verification that I need a new ECU and that will solve my main problem of not giving out codes or being ready to monitor to pass a smog check?

This car runs fine, have driven to Arizona several times. I have replaced the radiator, timing belt, water pump, fan. The radiator over flow bottle stays at the same level.

Thanks in advance!
MJB

I got one from AutoComputerExchange. They sell on eBay too. And it will come with a lifetime warranty. Here's the link:

2001 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Engine Computer ECM PCM ECU Replacement | eBay

PS: I offer this just as a vendor recommendation. I have no idea whether you actually need another PCM or not. There's no routine vehicle inspections in Arkansas. We have what's called a "Republican trifecta" in state government.

You might try replacing that O2 sensor.

Thanks Handy_Cruiser for the information! That is one of the companies I have already bookmarked. Glad you are giving them a good recommendation.

Will certainly change out the O2 sensor, but I'm very interested in seeing if I need to change out the computer as well.
