Tranny problem

So my grand daughters 04' PT is not shifting in to 3rd gear. I'm leaving for advanced right now to get a filter and fluid. I will check this thread before starting the change. If you guys got any ideas, let me know. I did a search and not much help except get F+4.

Is the engine light on? If so what are the engine trouble codes?

How many miles on the transmission?

Engine light was always on. Don't know codes. About 200,000 miles

Re: Tranny problem

Chrysler designed these automatic transmissions with this "limp mode" feature. Essentially, if the control module senses that something is wrong it will force the transmission to stay in second gear to avoid causing further damage (by shifting and/or driving at high speeds).

If you get the general transmission code P0700 (The presence of this code means the TCM detected a problem) take it to transmission repair shop that will give you the specific transmission codes for free.

We need to find out why it went into limp mode so post what the codes are and we can help you diagnose it better.

Thank you, this sounds like what happened. I haven't worked on it yet. Would you believe it, my truck quit completely. (Transmission) had to get it towed home. I'll get back to you.

Just don't take it to an AAMCO. That stands for All Automatics Must Come Out. I don't know anyone that's ever had a good experience with those clowns.

So I did the codes trick and it didn't work. No codes or done. Just the odometer.

You should buy an OBDII Scan Tool.

Make sure your engine trouble light is still coming on.

I found at the beginning before I bought my OBDII Scan tool I was also having trouble getting the codes but it took practice and you need to do it under 5 seconds.

I think I was quicker than 5 sec. I guess I'll try it again.
