Default Pencil strut

Okay. Put new upper and lower torque struts on my PT today and came to the realization that some PO has left the pencil strut off at some previous encounter.

I'm gonna get one tomorrow at Pull n Pay but just for curiosity sake, does anyone know just what it does?

I'm not sure, but I THINK it helps stabilize the lower motor mount.

Yes like chuzz said its a reinforcement. For that location. If it didn't need it. The factory would have saved the money it cost. Good that you put it back as it should be.

The pencil strut on the PT is pretty light weight. My guess is that it is just there to help with vibration. That's about all it could do.

Although that bracket doesn't weigh much. You could lift the PT by that bracket. It's there to take stress off that mounting point. the k subframe is just sticking out there and there is the a arm connected there also. So this gives some needed strength to that area.

Thanks for all the posts. I already replaced it. I realize if it weren't needed, it wouldn't be there. I worked for GM for many years. A lot of people do not realize that every nut and bolt serves a purpose or it would not be there. Take a .10 nut and multiply it by cars sold and it makes a chunk of change/profit for the company.

All I was asking is if anyone knew its purpose. Trying fathom why some knucklehead before me would leave it off. Thanks.

I do ..but to save debate let me just say the strengthening of the front sub-frame is always beneficial.

On other platforms many will seek them out at auto recylers from convertibles for their like model coupes.

While I will say that I have never actually read anyone doing testing on a OEM before and after, it may be an upgrade that is more a placebo mod? It was also dealer manufacture recommended retro fit on some convertibles years ago on other makes to cure certain alignment and steering stability concerns consumers had? So somebody thought they worked that engineers these things.
