Default Skim bypass questions (01 5 speed PT)

Hey guys, got the infamous 1685 code. Just bought the car as a non runner on the cheap. Did some research and it seems like there are some ways around this.

One idea was, could I get a new/rebuilt pcm, and unhook the SKIM?

From what I read, as long as the new pcm never reads a skim, it should function properly without it and without the special chip keys.
I found over and over, hook up new pcm, reads skim, needs the SKIM key.

The other idea would be a remote start skim bypass module. If anyone had done this, which one did you use and where did you buy it.

Any input is appreciated guys! Thanks!

i have a PCM from an 2002 5spd that should work in your car.

my car takes a black, no chip key. so provided you never reconnect the SKIM, the car should run fine. only problem is you won't have any of the other skim module junk which i believe means you'd need to actually use a key to open the door.

Ya im down for a trial run.
What's your PayPal? Ill send my address and the shipping cost.
I'm leaning towards pcm fail because A. It's a common issue on these guys B. I have power at the obd port, but no communication.

If the pcm was bad, would everything still work and motor turn over, just no start?

I was going to post some hopefully helpful stuff here. But this is the PERFECT solution if the SKIM is the real issue.

Hey post away. Any info or possible testing procedures are welcomed. I like to be thorough in testing before I start with money and parts

Okay,

First, the 2001/2002 PCM is different than later model PT's and not all information you find will apply. These early PT's also have a separate TCM to control transmission. Thus, I'm not sure if 5-speed PCM and auto PCM are different on these cars.

The SKIM system requires a handshake between the gray sentry key, SKIM module in the steering column and the PCM. Handshake between the sentry key and SKIM module is based on a 6-digit code. But the handshake between the SKIM module and PCM is based on the VIN. Your problem could be any of these three or the wiring in between. Since the PT was like this when you got it, other things may also be in play.

* If it was me I would first assure I have a sentry key. It should have gray plastic on the round part. If your key is not a sentry key, then there is your likely issue.

* Next, I would check the VIN that is programmed into the PCM. If never flashed, the VIN may be on a tag on the side of the PCM. It should match the VIN on your PT. You can also check this easily if your code reader can show you the VIN. That will be the one in the PCM. If different than the PT, the history of the car may be that the original PCM died and was replaced by one from another PT. However, if the original VIN was not flashed to the replacement PCM, it would have exactly the symptoms you have now.

* If no joy, I'd look for signs of the lock/cylinder or steering column being replaced. Changing the lock/cylinder to one that included a different sentry key would give the same problem. And if the column was replaced with a different lock/cylinder and/or SKIM module, the problem again would be the same.

* Also, look for loose and cut wiring. Unplug the PCM, clean the plug and reinstall. See if that makes a difference.

The good part is that a non-SKIM PCM will likely address the issue if the issue is with the miss-mating of the PCM, SKIM module and/or sentry key. Just make sure to unplug and remove the SKIM unit before installing the non-SKIM PCM. If the replacement non-SKIM PCM detects the SKIM, it may try to mate with it. I would not want that.

Of course, none of us here has seen your PT first hand. So everything we offer is a guess and we are depending on your diagnosis of this being a SKIM issue. Please be sure and let us know if this fixes your issue.
