Default Fuel gauge stuck on full

I have a 2004 TE 5 speed manual non turbo.
a couple days ago I filled up my tank. my first fill up since I bought the car.

then yesterday, I changed the bulbs in the gauge cluster. I also painted the calipers and brake drums, so I let the car sit for 24 hours.

today I drove the car 45 miles and the fuel gauge is still in the full position.
when I turn the key off, the gauge drops to below empty (like it should).

I start the car and the gauge goes back to full. turn it off, and the gauge drops to empty. so I know the gauge works.

I would think the gauge would've dropped below full by now.

any ideas? something maybe I can do, or is the sending unit stuck?

just curious,...
when you top off the tank (complete fill up), how long does it take before the needle starts to drop? how many miles?

I've driven 45 miles and it is still at full.

this last fill up was a complete fill up, so the needle was past full. I just cant believe I can go 50 miles without the needle moving. I guess i'll know more when I drive the car tomorrow. if I go another 30-40 miles and the needle still stays on full, I have to start trouble shooting.

like I said before, when I turn the car off, the needle drops to below empty.

btw, i checked the mileage after the fill up. i got 22 mpg (233 miles and 10.6 gallons to fill the tank)

Maybe your cruiser accidentally switched in to "God Mode" :-)

A couple of weeks ago I could not top it up... tank was full, even though it shouldn't have been. This went on for a couple of days, and when it finally did let me put some gas in, it only took seven bucks.
According to the odometer/gas fill records, it gave me 47(!!!!!) mpg on that tank.

Impossible! My local Chevron must have accidentally got a tanker full of experimental jet fuel

This week it's back to the usual 17mpg city...

PS: my gas gauge doesn't move for the first 50 miles, then it drops to 3/4 rapidly

FIXED!!!

I thought it was funny that the fuel gauge didn't work after changing the cluster lights the day before. I did some extensive googling and came up with a simple fix.

just reset the gauge cluster. push the odometer button in and turn the key on. it recalibrated the gauges.

I now have just over 3/4 of a tank after driving 80 miles. that is more like it.

I must have flipped the cluster upside down while I was replacing the bulbs. I don't remember doing it because I knew that it could cause a problem.

anyway...that issue is solved. hope all other issues will be as easy

Thanks for posting the fix. This will help other members that takes the Instrument Cluster out for various reasons and finds the fuel gauge stuck on full after reinstalling the cluster.

its the least I could do. this forum has helped me not only know what to look for when buying a PT, but what things should be replaced. that gave me leverage when buying my PT to get a good price.

plus, the multi switch fix, gauge light fix, motor mount replacement, as well as timing belt and tensioner with the water pump.

i'm ready to enjoy my car as if it were new. plus, now I know how much gas I have in the tank

thanks
