Default Horn now sounds like a sick chicken

So I washed my PT the other day, and now the horn sounds like a sick chicken. You can barely hear it. Did I flood it out or something?

I did a search on this forum and saw that there are 20 PAGES of horn problems.

YUCK.

I haven't tried anything yet. Any ideas?

If you got water into it (and it's positioned so the water can't drain out), then yes, it would sound like a sick chicken.

You will need to access the horn, behind the splash guard in front of the front passenger side tire (edit: your PT is a 2006...if only one horn, it may be at the driver's front wheel, not passenger). Just turn the wheels towards the left to give just enough room to get into the splash guard. You may find that your horn was put on wrong, in that it's collecting water instead of allowing it to drain. If you are lucky, you can just re-position it after draining the water and hopefully it will work.

Here's a photo of the horn location and correct positioning on my 2005 GT. If you remove the front right wheel and unbolt the fender liner it's easy to get to. Make sure it's pointed down like on the photo.

While doing some serious washing, I've gotten water in horns before including this one (and the high tone horn I added). It will normally clear out on its own after a day or two. If not, you may be able to purge the water from it using compressed air. I might try a can of compressed air that you use to clean the dust out of key boards. They are very cheap at Office "Despot" as we call it here. The straw that comes with it may come in handy. And it's likely not enough pressure to hurt the horn.

PS: Here's a photo of the high tone horn I added from off of a 2001 PT. Together with the low tone horn that comes on later PT's they give a full harmonic tone. You get a honk instead of a beep.

Thanks Handy! I kind of figured that's what may have happened. Maybe this weekend I will get a chance to look ...

And, FWIW my 1983 Imperial had a Tri-Tone horn. What a cool sound! I'd love to do that to "Fireball".
