As per DOT Website:
"ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.4L NON-TURBO ENGINES AND AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLES. ROUTING VARIATION IN THE HIGH PRESSURE POWER STEERING HOSE COULD ALLOW CONTACT WITH THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE DIFFERENTIAL COVER, POTENTIALLY DAMAGING THE HOSE." You Juice-Drive owners never can catch a break. Lousy Acceleration, excessive brake wear (and grimy wheels), poor gas mileage. And now this. As for this as a blow to Mopar's recent quality improvements: The PT is still darn reliable.

Just checked our hose today while doing the oil & filter change. I can see that the hose has rubbed the transaxle case and differential cover only to the point that the braided cover on the hose was disturbed, no wear marks on the hose itself. I moved the hose/tube away from the transaxle and could see the tube rotate in the fitting going into the steering unit. I tried to tighten the fitting but it is larger than a 17mm / 11/16" and smaller than a 19mm / 3/4" wrench and there was no room to work with an adjustable.Does anyone know what size wrench will work or is a special tool required?
Guess I'll let the dealer tighten it.

I was just told by DaimlerChrysler (1-800-853-1403) that it is not an "official" recall yet so I can not take my 2002 PT Cruiser in for repair. HELLO people
it is on the NHTSA website and it can cause a fire!!! What are they waiting for??? [xx(] The NHTSA website says it is all vehicles built between January 17, 2000- April 26, 2004. I would say my 2002 falls in between those dates. Sorry now I am ranting! ![]() If anyone else calls Chrysler (I suggest everyone does) and has a different result please let me know. Thanks! |

I called my dealership yesterday to see if my '02 was affected by the recall and if it was what exactly do I need to do. Well the service tech got smart with me and said if your car is affected you will get a letter from Chrysler and hung up on me. Needless to say I am not a happy camper at the moment
. I agree with Krys33 I think my car falls in that time period too.Aimee ![]() |

Well, mine is an '03 turbo and before the recall made the news, I noticed that my power steering fluid was low. I have an appointment tomorrow to have it looked at. Maybe some of the turbos are affected as well???

Rainman,
There have been problems with the steering rack leaking into the boots covering the tie rod ends. The fluid stays in the boots and moves from side to side as you turn the wheels but nothing on the ground, just low fluid level.

I don't know if this is what the recall is covering, but this past winter (my first with the PT)I noticed that if the car was cold and I started to leave without letting the PT warm up the power steering would make a horrible noise like it was low on power steering fluid. My husband checked my levels and said it was normal and I shouldn't be worried about it. I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem.

tpcruiser,
I recently moved into a new home that has a garage and have noticed random scattered drops of some sort of fluid on the garage floor. They are not puddles, but appear to only be a drop at a time. I crawled under the car the other day to see what I could find but could find absolutely no place under that seemed we from fluid. Maybe it is collecting in the boots and dropping a drop here and there. Anyhow, it is in the shop and they are supposed to look at it this morning. As soon as I hear anything, i will let everyone know. Again, thanks alot.

Rainman,
there is a small tube that connects the boots on each side, it's designed for air to pass through as the boots expand and collapse as you turn the wheels. If the fluid has leaked into the boots, the occasional spots you see may be some fluid dripping where the tube goes into the boots. The boots are for keeping dust out, not fluid in.
