Default Alternator

Good news is my 01' Limited Edition with 145k Mi passed Marta last week! Bad news is this morning the battery light came on and I started losing power thence not I shut her off she was dead. So towed her to the mechanic but haven't heard what it is yet but we assume alternator, but I had a new one put in in 2011. Wondering how much more I can keep spending on her before I have say goodbye🙁

True that! ^^^^^^^ Repairs has to be done sometimes. Just think of the maintenance as cost of driving. I'm betting if you repair guy is good you get off rather cheep over a years time.

Was that a completely rebuilt or refurbished alternator? Rebuilt means they go through and replace everything. Refurbished just means they clean up an old one and replace whatever appears to be worn out. Like the brushes and bearings. They don't replace the fields, armature or commutator unless they're worn out too.

RESOLUTION

Don't know exactly about the alternator but I know that was before I found a trusted mechanic and I overpaid a place but they were kind enough to give me payment plan options...

Thank you! I do consider these repairs better than a car payment and I love my PT because she's truly one of a kind, 01 was the first year they made PT it was motor trend car of the year!

This car is the car I got when my truck 01 Nissan Frontier I had from age 16-28 at 188k mi had to go so I traded for
PT never looked back and fell on hard times and PT even gave me shelter from the storm a night or two.. And she's been there for my comeback now we're on our feet again and can afford her repair needs because emergency funds are kept in place (knock on wood)

So today started before the sun came up, after manually unlocking my black 01 Limited Editon PT as I always do because my unlock button battery is dead but that's another repair for another time, no
Today after hopping into PT and heading to work BAM the red battery light shines telling me heey! It's the battery, well I keep
Driving because when I wake up I have it timed where I have to keep moving or I'm late to the hotel I work at. So I'm going down city
Streets with my battery light on then I get on the interstate and I'm thinking she'll make it, cause she's coming off a STRONG winter where people where giving up on a icy hill telling me to as well but I stayed with her and she got us home that blizzard day but I digress... So I'm on the interstate getting real close to work and she starts losing power headlights dimming so I say 'Gotta get off the interstate' I ramp off start heading towards work I get there and soon as I shut PT Off she was out ... Had her towed for $85, feared alternator which I had replaced in 2011, also before her great winter there was the January 2015 engine replacement for $2861 when her original engine went out at around 129k mi, so it wasn't the alternator... IT WAS THE CHEAP Walmart $48 battery I put in her 3 years ago! Apparently the battery had so much corrosion that it had an internal short and may have cased! So I pony' d up for a interstate battery total cost of today's getting PT a new battery was $85 for tow , $10 to a friend for a ride to pick her up, $170 for the new battery installed

Now ain't nothing left but to keep on cruisin!😎

Glad you're back on the road and still love your PT

I don't know where you live, but here in the Texas heat, 3 years is about all you will get out of a battery, they don't seem to last as long as they used to.

Happy PT'ing
