Default Troubleshooting Airbag Light On Code 79

Hello PTC fans, I am trying to diagnose the airbag light on constantly in my 2004 GT Turbo. I have a code scanner that does SRS codes, and I get code 79 constantly. So far I have been unable to find out for sure what this code means. I have replaced the OCM module with a used unit to no avail. I did this because it seemed the code 79 did not exist. I have the factory manuals for service and body diagnostics, the problem is Chrysler does not list a numeric code, only the description as this is what the DRB3 tool returns. So I do not have a means to connect a numeric code to a description.

Since I could not find the code, I have since unplugged every component of the SRS system one at a time and retested. My thinking was that when I hit the bad component, the code 79 will either a) be replaced by another code or b) stay as the only code. I have still not found a component that fits this expected outcome. I will document here what codes I have found in case that might help somebody else in the future:

05 Pass Airbag (Squib)
06 Driver Airbag (Squib)
63 Pass Seat Belt Tensioner
64 Driver Seat Belt Tensioner
95 Pass Seat Airbag (Squib)
96 Driver Seat Airbag (Squib)
194 Driver Side Impact Sensor (SIS)
195 Pass Side Impact Sensor (SIS)

You can see that the 2nd digit (or 3rd for 3-digit SIS codes) indicates which side of the vehicle where odd = pass and even = driver. So the problem should be on the pass side. The 1st digit seems to go with the component, but I don't know what 7 is. I have the factory wiring diagram and these are the only components as far as I can tell. There is no seat sensor for weight, that started in 2006 on the PTC from what I can tell.

Anyone else seen code 79 on their SRS? I am stumped. BTW I am a former line mechanic (GM) so you can talk technical to me.

I don't have a clue what the code means, but sometimes it's the simple things that can throw you. It MIGHT possibly be just the connector in the seat belt buckle. I'd try cleaning it and see what happens. If not that, try cleaning the belt retractor under the cover on the B pillar. If neither helps, maybe there's a sensor in the seat cushion? IDK, but I had and Equinox several years ago that I had a similar problem with and it was a dang sensor pad under the seat cover of the passenger seat. I don't know if the PT has a similar set up, but you might try removing the seat cover and check and see. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?

Thanks for your reply but there is no seat sensor on an '04 model. I've already pulled the seats out to check to be sure.

There is no switch in the seatbelt latch, either. The seatbelt retractor can tell if the seatbelt has been extended enough for a person and that is how it tells if you are using the seatbelt or not. I've already had both seat belt retractors out and disconnected and that's not it - would be nice if it was.

Maybe this will help:
chrysler codes airbag reset | airbag module | airbag light on | engine code | maint reqd | service reset | trouble code |

B1B79 PASSENGER SEAT WEIGHT SENSOR 3 LEFT FRONT INPUT CIRCUIT LOW

I don't know if your scanner shows the complete message but this one is the closest. Did you have the same code with the original module? Sometimes a dirty connector or broken wire to the sensor is the culprit.

Yes.

I appreciate that y'all are trying to help, but I have already said twice there is no weight sensor in either seat. I confirmed it last night by pulling out the seats just to be sure. Seat sensors did not start until the 2006 MY for the PTC.

B0079 is more likely than B1B79 - that is driver's side seat belt tensioner. However, that is not it either, odd codes are on the passenger side and also I already pulled BOTH of the SB tensioners and they give codes 95 & 96 when they are unplugged (which I documented above) but code 79 remains. If that was it, the new code (either 95 or 96 depending on the side) should REPLACE code 79 when the tensioner is unplugged.

Got me stumped, man. BUT, I'm not an ASE certified mechanic or electrical technician. I miss the old days of points and carburetors sometimes!

So just to add to the list of codes for the sake of posterity, last night I pulled the Run fuse (#5) and checked the codes, then put it back and pulled the Run-Start fuse (#9) and checked again. Here's what I got:

20 Run Fuse pulled
21 Run-Start Fuse pulled

So the problem is not in the power delivery. I was thinking that perhaps I could have a wiring problem where one or the other fuse circuits was not delivering power to the OCM even tho the fuse was good, but no luck.

What scanner did you use to get these codes?
