Default Manual Transmission Questions

So, it's been a year since I was on the forum, but since I sold Betty I haven't had a Cruiser. Got a line on one, it's an O2 Limited with a manual transmission. Two questions: 1. Does a manual transmission get any better performance than the automatic?; 2. How hard is it to change out the manual transmission?

When I'm looking at seems to be stuck in third gear. Been looking for a new Cruiser and this might be the one.

the transmission is easier to swap out than replacing the timing belt

A weak point for the manual transmissions seems to be the shifter bushings, but they're easy to replace. There's two bushings in the console under the stick shift and there's two bushings on top of the transmission itself. The shifting is controlled by two cables that run between the shift mechanism in the console and the transmission.

I had the situation where my stick shift went "all floppy", but by playing with the stick shift, I could tease it back into gear. Once I got it home, all it took to fix it was removing the console and replacing a worn out bushing.

Check the bushings first, it may be something simple.

The manual tran feels a hell of a lot faster. In order to get the trans stuck in third yours either have a cable issue or some serious damage inside. With how much I beat on mine I'd lean towards a cable problem.

Not many aluminum/breakable parts in there

there is a doorman part that is the shifter bushings. but you have to take everything out around that area to get at them easily, although. $5 fix

You guys keep talking about the bushings on the shifter end, on my car the bushings on the tranny side are shot. I would imagine the ones in the engine compartment are more likely to go bad - more extreme heat, more likely to have junk and chemicals kick up on them. I would check those first. You can see them with a flashlight after you yank the air box. I have read about a bunch of guys swapping those while the ones inside the car were still okay.

That is probably next on my last after the parking brake.

the first few months i drove my car i had no bushings on the transmission end of the cables. i had no problems driving normal, beating on the car, or even powershifting. i couldn't even tell they were missing. maybe once in a blue moon it would jump out reverse if i wasn't holding the shifter. if it's stuck in third and the cable didn't physically fall off, i would look elsewhere.

Since we're on the topic, did all manual trans pt cruisers get the getrag 288? Looking to replace mine for a used and would like to find one ASAP.

The manual does feel faster and may get you better mpg's.

No my 02 has an nv-t350.

The service manual i used for repair is here https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...qXixTbXScn0peQ

To the OP, swapping it out would take me about 4 hours
