Could be in the instrument cluster which also serves as a body control module. Or it could be in the shift selector switch in the transmission. And there's several additional "or's".

This is one of the those few times that I recommend taking a car to a shop. A good transmission shop can do diagnostics that you cannot do at home. You just have to find a good shop that doesn't tell every customer that comes through the door that they need their transmission rebuilt.

Also, if your 2006 has the VLP transmission, I have a low-mileage unit I'd love to sell.

This is actually good news. You may only be dealing with a bad PCM plug or harness.

I would remove all the plugs from the PCM (computer). And would inspect them very closely. If I saw no issue I would clean them and the sockets on the PCM very thoroughly with electrical cleaner. If I found oil in one or more of the plugs, I would replace the oil pressure sending unit which can push oil up through the wire loom if leaking. Then I would reassemble and see what happens.

If no joy, I would pull the connections again, remove the wire loom and tape and inspect again looking for broken wires and/or damaged insulation.

Also, be sure to inspect the PCM sockets for bent or corroded pins. I believe the plug that controls the transmission is the one marked in green.

I would be surprised if it was stuck in 1st. More likely second as that is the default for a TCM problem. I would serious take your PT Cruiser to a transmission shop and have them check the TCM codes.

I don't think Todd mentioned disconnecting the battery before messing with the PCM. At least, that's what I'd do, but I'm NOT a mechanic. I don't know diddly squat. NitroPT has always given me good advice. You may want to do as he suggested.
