Default Recommendations For An OBD Scanner

My OBD scanner is starting to get old and I would like to update it.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

What do you think of these mini wifi/bluetooth jobs that plug into the OBD port and connect to your phone?

My neighbor has a cheap bluetooth one that he seems to like but when I read about the $10 ones made in Asia they get real mixed reviews.

I would ideally like something that could help me diagnose the short I recently had in my AC, if that's possible.

My budget at the low end would be $80 and at the high end $200 max.

Thanks for all input.

FWIW the cheap $10 bluetooth ones..... well, my friend tried one on his Volvo and the car wouldn't start with it plugged in nor would it pull any codes.

It wouldn't pull any codes from my PT either when I knew damned well it had a P0304 code at the time.

I have a hard time reading Chinese instructions even when translated! But the market for items is growing considerably so I guess it is the future?

I got the lower priced version:
OBD II Scanner - CAN & OBD II Deluxe Scan Tool

And it worked fine on the PT Cruiser for diagnostics.

I also bought a bluetooth ELM327 dongle on ebay and it actually worked fine too. With the right freeware OBD2 software you can also reset codes and check readiness of your car for smog inspections but it only works on Android devices and it won't work on Apple devices because Apple does not allow all generic Bluetooth devices to work. For that you need a WiFi OBD2 adapter or custom iOS paid software and it will then communicate with the Apple iPhone.

One of the best OBD2 scanners is the UltraGauge. It is more of a display consoles that doubles as an OBD2 scanner/resetter. I bought the dedicated display but they also sell a Blue Wireless dongle that is compatible with Android and iOS. The cost is about the same as the dedicated console unit ($80 for the dongle and software vs. $70 for the dedicated wired display).

Someone on this forum made an awesome bracket for the UltraGauge that mounts perfectly on the PT Crusier. Look below the Ford Explorer mount pictures for the PT Cruiser mount.
