What tools do you have? OBDII Scan tool?

You must already have a list?

Post what you have and we will add to it!

I don't have a scanner as all my other cars don't have odb2. they are pre 1994. I was gonna take a floor jack to jack it up . its currently tagged and insured so I was gonna do a road test. I told her I want to do a cold start of the engine and see how it warms up. do these have the same head gasket oil leak problems as the neons?

you should probably hire someone who does used car inspections. this will be the smart thing to do.

It would be a wasted trip if the engine light is on and you don't have an OBDII Scan Tool. Recommend you get one. They are very reasonable at Harbor Freight.

If you take a chance and buy it without finding out the codes you might be looking at expensive items to replace like the possible P0420 for Catalyst Converter, p07xxx for possible transmission problems, etc. You can use this to bring the price down on the PT Cruiser.

My 2 cents: You are thinking of buying a 13 year-old car that has been driven the equivalent miles of 25 times back and forth across the United States. On any car this age, not just a PT, anything made out of rubber or plastic or composite -- any hose or gasket or seal or plastic switch or connector - could fail after 13 years of heat and vibration. Certainly the timing belt, water pump and crankshaft and camshaft seals were replaced at 100,000 miles? Look for the confirming repair receipt. If the control arm/bushings and engine mounts were not replaced in the last 40,000 miles, you can count on replacing them again. Radiator, fan assembly, bits and pieces of the clutch assembly -- again, on any type of car this age, they might go another 30,000 miles. And then again, they might fail tomorrow.

I'm new here and for the last 6-9 month I've been looking for a cruiser
early on I ruled out the 03 cruiser for one reason only
The ECU is a one year only...

Not a big issue But down the road if i needed a replacement
I figured it would be unobtainable.
So I narrowed it down to two yrs 04-05
Hence the reason I had been looking for so long

o I went and looked at it. over all its ok. the car drives real nice and smooth. no noises shakes ect. brakes seem a little soft. transmission shifted good but the clutch reservoir was low on fluid. I hope that's because either the slave cylinder or the clutch master cylinder is leaking . ac worked good. tie rods have been replaced as there were grease fittings on it. boots on the lower balljoints are not damaged. shocks are original and need replacing(I can do that myself). looks like it has a new radiator. I can see the lower engine mount has cracks in the rubber.there are some minor leaks of fluids like driver side axle seal. cv boots good. the check engine light is on and when we went to go get it read it said evaporator canister purge valve( the solenoid by the charcoal canister). inspection is good till apr 2017 there is a trailer hitch which is great. the body has 2 rust spots on the rockers on the underside(car is from Indiana ). they are about 2x2 inches and the other side is about 5x3 inches. rest of the car is good. the passenger headlight is broken and the fender is slightly pushed in. it does not have cruise control or power locks or a sunroof(don't like them anyways) all windows work great and so does the electrical. interior is in nice shape but dirty. she must sell the car to move. she wanted 1700$ for the car, but being that she must sell id say 1100 . title is clean not a salvage
as far as timing belt being replaced, I could not see if it had been.i do not know if clutch has been changed either.

Good to see you took an OBDII Scan tool with you!

You need to replace the timing belt, and while you are skinning your knuckles and cursing, might as well go after other stuff as well. Bad engine mounts, fluid leaks, body rust, fender damage, broken headlight..... I'd say $500 is a fair price. Go on line, and you can find PTs for $1700 in 'good' condition, without all the problems you are buying here.... Good luck!
