Default Oily/petroleum smell at idle, uggh!!

Howdy! I'm a noob to ptcruiserlinks, so please forgive and advise me if I'm doing something wrong.

My daughter just bought a 2003 PT Cruiser. She loves it, but she's concerned about an oily/petroleum smell through the car's air vents when it's at idle or when the car is stopped at a light. The smell is present only when the fresh air/recirculation switch is set to fresh air. The engine isn't leaking oil (from what we've seen so far). As far as I can tell, no oil is dripping/leaking onto the exhaust manifold, but to me, that is exactly what it smells like. Has anyone ever dealt with this with their PT Cruiser? I suspect a faulty PCV valve, but also have my doubts that's the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You probably have a small oil leak that's hitting something hot and causing the fumes to go inside the cabin when you draw fresh air.

The valve cover gasket tends to leak a tiny bit as these cars get older. It's about $30 for a new gasket set and can take a couple hours to change out. Not hard to do just time consuming...
rob302 and egandb like this.

rcktpwrd, turns out you were correct - it did end up being a leaky valve cover gasket.

Thanks for the idea and advice!

Just nuttz. The last "tech" in there was an absolute HACK.
No mention of any oil loss, but it had to be extreme - on the order of 1qt/week.
