Default clunking noise

08 PT base 62000 mi... been hearing a clunking noise coming from the rear as the vehicle is driven over uneven pavement or in/out of a steep driveway or turned abruptly. Have inspected everything under the rear and nothing seems loose or out of order. However, can somewhat duplicate the noise by lightly pounding the bottom of the plastic gas tank with my fist. The straps are tight and in good condition although there does seem to be a little play in one of them. There are loose styrofoam blocks in the rear bumper but don't think that is the noise source.

Anyone else having a similar experience with this sort of noise? Any other suggestions on what to look for? ...shocks maybe?

It could be the watts link/bell crank attached to the middle of the axle. The bushing will wear and it is metal to metal and will make a clunking sound.

I bet this is the same thing I hear in my PT. Please tell us what the cause is if/when you find out.

Why are there loose styrofoam blocks in the bumper? I'd remove the bumper and those and drive it and see if the sound is gone. Anything loose is going to move around and cause some type of noise. And noise transfers through metal.

The noise sounds metallic. Anyway, have a watts link bellcrank on order... just need to get it and then find enough time and ambition to install it. Will let y'all know if that cures the noise.

Well, since you have now made it clear that it's a metallic sound, the watts link is a good place to start. If not that, perhaps a busted strut?

I had the same issue on a pontiac sunfire that I owned. I was getting a strange clunk from the rear end. I ended up finding the problem when I removed the rear bumper and bar. It was a rebuilt so the repair shop or person did a terrible job and left many things unbolted and loose. I recon yours was in a rear end collision and some pieces could be loose and hitting at the right angle. That's my first guess and the foam reinforcement being loose is a good clue.

Thanks for all the replies. Replaced the watts link bellcrank today (Dorman P/N 523-026) and that solved the problem. No more clunking noise.
