Default Cheap 2003 PT Cruiser

I very recently found a 2003 PT Cruiser with a rebuilt engine and turbo that I can buy really cheap, smart choice to buy or no? Just would like to hear some opinions

I like the 2005 PT Cruiser as being a better year.

Chrysler PT Cruiser Problems | CarComplaints.com

The 2003 PT Cruiser Turbo has a weak point with the radiator fan being very expensive and very hard to verify as being faulty due to it having a variable speed fan. This tends to make the owners try to forget about the radiator fan being a problem. This inaction by some owners in my opinion causes more 2003 PT Cruiser turbo engines to overheat then the other years and when someone else buys it I wonder if they know how many times the engine has been overheated if there was problems with the radiator fan if the owner was not a mechanic. I like the odds better with the 2005 PT Cruiser.

Thanks again for your quick response ptcruisersteve, I completely agree with you that the 2005 is a better car, I was considering maybe just buying this 2003 for a parts car even though it does have a clean title, I also can see some kind of badge on the doors just under the pt cruiser emblem, I'm very new to the pt cruiser scene but thought I had seen something about the badge on another post, is that a badge for a dream cruiser or something?

That sounds more like a 2004 Platinum edition. Usually the ones' I've seen like the Dream Cruiser or others have the special emblem on the rear hatch, but the Platinums have "Platinum Edition" badges on the front doors under the PT Cruiser letters. What color is it? I think they just came in gray or black.

I have one of these by the way, and I absolutely love it. For really cheap with a rebuilt engine, I'd probably consider another a steal if it runs well enough.

If it's cheap enough, runs good and is in good shape, I say buy it. First year for the turbo.

Here's the main differences with the 2003 GT:

* All 2003 turbo PT's are GT's. There was no turbo lite in 2003.
* The 2003 GT has less horsepower than later GT's and doesn't have the High Output badge on the rear hatch.
* The 2003 GT comes with smaller injectors. According to Chrysler, these need to be upgraded when adding a Stage 1 PCM.
* Once the Stage 1 PCM and injectors are added, horse power is about the same as the 2004/2005 GT's with Stage 1. This levels the playing field.
* The 2003 GT has the variable speed radiator fan. It's the only PT that had this.
* The PCM for the 2003 GT is unique as is the 2003 Stage 1 PCM. They have unique controls for the variable speed radiator fan.
* The 2003 GT came with different trim levels. Some have leather seats and some have cloth seats. Some have chrome wheels and some have painted alloy wheels.
* The sunroof is optional on the 2003 GT. 2004/2005 GT's all have them as far as I know.
* All 2003 GT's have the Autostick shifter and 140 mph speedometer just like the 2004/2005 GT's.
* The 2003 GT has a unique finish on the dash bezels.
* The 2003 GT does not come standard with the chrome door pulls and silver pedals like the 2004/2005. But some may have them as options.

Is the 2003 GT worth having? YES in my opinion. The unique fan and PCM only become issues when doing certain performance upgrades. And replacement of a failed variable speed fan is doable either with a several-hundred-dollar replacement or wiring in a two speed fan with a separate control. If I was buying another PT wagon, a 2003 Dream Cruiser IS the PT I would want.

PS: If there are factory badges beneath the "PT Cruiser" emblems on the front doors, this may be a 2004 Platinum Edition as some members have already said. This is a very fancy turbo lite with the "chrome package" and gray inlays in the leather seats and doors. There is a Chrysler wing emblem embossed in the headrests too. The color is either a metallic gray or silver. You can see where I harvested some parts off a salvage Platinum Edition in this thread:

What did you do to your Cruiser today?

I am going to look at it today, I have only seen pictures so far. It says in the add that it needs work but if the engine, transmission and all the wiring seem to be in tact I think it is definitely worth buying, I will definitely let everyone know what I find when I get there, you never know, some people aren't aware of what they have, not that it's rare or anything but these turbo engines are pretty stout and seem to be selling for really good money, I can't tell what the badge says in the pics but it is black and has the nice wheels and the spoiler that is level with the roof line. The badge is rectangle shaped with kind of a not quite 1/2 circle on the bottom, I'm anxious to see it!

Here's what the 2004 Platinum Edition badge looks like:

Thank you for that information Handy Cruiser, that Platinum Edition badge that you sent the pickup it's definitely the shape of the badge on this car but I can't tell what it says, the Platinum Edition was only made in 2004? This guy either doesn't know what year is car is or he's taken both front doors off of platinum edition and put them on this car because the Badges are definitely on both sides
