Default Symptoms of bad Center engine mount?

2002 PT, 5 speed manual, 118000 miles, timing belt changed 1 year ago.

I'm having a clunky/creaky sound when engaging the clutch and when transitioning between engine braking to acceleration.

If I'm really easy on it, it is not very pronounced and sometimes doesn't happen. i've checked all suspension linkages, ball joints, control arm bushings, brakes for lose items that could be creaking or clunking but everything seems rock solid. I put in new ball joints, control arms/bushings, stabilizer links in 2012.

I've gathered that I should have changed the center mount when i did the timing belt a year ago and I'm starting to think this is the problem, but I'm not sure exactly how they go bad or what to check for.

I replaced the upper and lower torque mounts when i did the timing belt but I left the center one as it was.

Any ideas? thanks!

If the upper and lower strut motor mounts are not properly aligned at 4.720 per the factory manual they tend to go bad again after 8 months to a year. I would suggest going underneath the PT Cruiser and see if the rubber is still good on the lower dog bone strut mount. Measure the alignment dimension and post what you find.

Might want to take a look here:

Urethane Motor Mount Inserts!

It sounds like you have the "symptoms" of motor mount issues. Apparently changing out the motor mounts is not as simple as R&R ... sigh ... par for the course as it were.

Most likely checking the ones you did replace for damage, is a good idea and get the center one and then make sure everything is lined up correctly ... is good advise ... who knew??

QUESTION:

If your center mount is bad and you swap out the torque struts is that a huge problem? I think all my mounts are bad, but I don't plan on doing the center mount until I do the timing belt and that probably won't be for another 5/50 or so. Does that mean that it will be worthless to swap the other mounts?

Anybody having trouble with the trans mount? I have a stick and I am surprised there isn't more chatter about them here. Other FWDs generally lump them all in together and do them at once. With the PT it seems 95% torque strut, 5% center mount, 0% trans mount.

I would suggest holding off on the center one until the upper and lower strut mounts have been checked out. Replacing the center mount is a project by itself and you want to confirm the problem is not elsewhere first.

I would also suggest doing some homework before using inserts. You might possibly have some vibration adding the inserts.

This is what a bad center mount looks like, it has a rubber insert similar to what the torque struts have.

a bad center engine mount is going to cause more wheel hop, then engine may sit lower and put stress on the top engine mount and break it, like it did mine.
you can inspect it by removing the left wheel, taking out the plastic cover for the center engine mount bolt, and inspecting the rubber for tears with a flash light.
to replace is a very big job, for myself the AC has to be disconnected, the engine has to be lifted out half way. there is a good youtube video of a russian guy doing the work in a dodge neon which is a similar procedure

The lower engine mount can cause a series of things nothing good. Vibration, hesitation off idle, clunks, bangs squeaks, etc. It may feel like a wheel out of balance or even an engine miss firing.

It is easy engine to check from under the PT with a pry bar or very long screw driver.

This mount has a "tear" in it, maybe not as severe as the mount that you showed pics of, but it was enough to cause a problem with the vehicle, one being a noticeable banging or knocking sound that could be heard inside the passenger compartment while riding in the rear passenger seat, which was the first indication of a problem.

Still having to demonstrate your one-upmanship? Didn't learn anything from a couple of other threads in the past few days?
