Default Help with codes

Hi. I'm new to this forum and need help
So my wife ran the car out of gas the other day. I added gas and it was really hard to start. It finally started and now I have check engine light on. I disconnected the battery to reset computer but the light came back on. It does seem and sound rough now.
Can I check codes withot a code reader. If so how? If not which reader do I need? Any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.
I suspect the fuel pump overheated of filter is plugged. I understand the the pump is in the tank is the filter there too?

Welcome to the forum.

Here's how to get the codes...

How to retrieve fault codes.

...and here's a list of codes to look up after you get it...

Error Codes

As far as the pump, yes, it's in the tank and the gas not only lubricates but also cools the pump so that's why it's never a good idea to run the tank low.

Crewzin. Thanks for your help. I search the codes and found 2.
P1684. Disconnected battery. I did it to clear other code.
P0601. Control module memory. I understand it to be failed pcm. How can this fail after running out of gas. When I got the car started (after running out of gas) it showed up right away.
Anyone have one they can sell?

I would suggest you buy an OBDII Scan Tool to reset the engine trouble codes or take it to an auto parts store where they can reset the codes for you. This needs to be done to see if engine trouble codes come up again.l

You need to confirm that the same codes comes up several times and confirm that the P0601 comes up several times before looking to see if the PCM is bad. Check underneath the PT Cruiser and make sure the wire harness going to the crankshaft sensor did not drop and is not rubbing on the half shaft or the frame shorting wires to ground.

I would suggest putting some Cheveron fuel injector cleaner that is safe for CAT in the fuel tank and see if that takes care of your rough idle.

hard to start could be fuel pressure. i'd eliminate that as one of the potential causes, along with good quality gas, possible dirty/sticking injectors, and the condition and proper function of the ignition system like the condition of the plug gaps or spark quality.

Yet another code. Since wife ran car out of gas I've been getting codes. Battery light goes on and off as we drive. No pattern to it.
P1684 power interupted. I did that trying to clear codes
P0601 memory loss (I suffer from that too). I don't know how that can come from running out of gas? But whatever
I forgot code but it's high voltage. I checked voltage. 14.2 to 14.1v from idle to 4000 rpm with and without load (lights, fans, defrost etc).
So I'm stumped. Battery is 1.5 years old. Always starts and runs great. Well muffler fell off today and had it replaced and changed right cv axel last week but other than that fine. Lol

My 2006 PT Cruiser was just doing the same thing with the fuel gauge after it sat for several months waiting for me to figure why it would not crank. The fuel gauge problem turned out to be that I lost the ground (wiring open) to the fuel level sensor. This did post a code but did not cause any start or dirveability problems. I repaired it by cutting an access hole above the fuel pump and checking the wiring harness. My 2006 has separate grounds for the pump and fuel level. These grounds go back to the left fender grounds behind the battery, you may want to check them first. I redid my left fender grounds to no avail before I cut the access panel above the fuel pump. Code was P0463. If the wiring checks good at the pump harness it may be the fuel level sensor itself.

My repair was to cut the fuel level sensing GROUND WIRE leaving several inches on the pump side, and solder a 10 inch pigtail with an eyelet to the connector wire. Ground the pigtail directly to the body.

First read what is being suggested by ptcruisersteve. Mostly STOP disconnecting the battery!

You should really check the battery condition by fully charging it and doing a load test.

After that follow a better DTC diagnostics follow up.

Most all none start issues will generate DTC(s). The key is finding the ones that are related to an issue and not simply because the engine is a slow start.

That code might be important so see if you can get that code to trigger again. This is why its important to have an OBDII Scan Tool.

The OBDII Scan Tool is very reasonable at Harbor Frieght.
