Question Won't start/trouble accelerating randomly, mechanic can't find anything wrong

Hey all,

I have a 2007 PT that is giving me an odd problem. Every once and a while, seemingly at random, while I am accelerating, the car seems to have trouble shifting into a faster gear. A few times it has also had trouble starting but eventually got going. Everything else is fine when I drive it and sometimes this doesn't happen for days. It never stalls, just has a little trouble and hesitation.

This is usually accompanied with a check engine light which only tells me to replace the gas cap, which I did, and nothing changed. Sometimes it will be fine for days and then happen again. I took it to the mechanic and they had no idea.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue?

I would suggest taking the PT Cruiser to a transmission shop and see if there are any transmission codes that are triggered. This will give you a better idea of where the problem might be.

Do you have the regular transmission oil changes and have checked the transmission oil level?

What are the engine codes you are getting? If you reset the DTC's what codes repeat?

How many miles are on your PT? If it's got over 50,000, then I'd suggest you change the fluid AND the filter. Use only ATF+4 fluid. I get my filter kits from O'Reilly Auto Parts. I've NOT tried one from Autozone or Advance, but have read that various members have had problems with the kits from both having filter that don't snap in properly. Seems the mounting tabs are just a little small and the filter falls back into the pan. If you use anything besides ATF+4 fluid in your trans, you will kill it.

Sounds like you have some kind of EVAP leak. Which will cause it to say GASCAP on the odometer. What is the actual code that you got from the OBDII scan..?? P0455, P0456 & P0457 are all common EVAP codes related to a vacuum leak near the gas tank.
