Default Smells Like Warm Coolant When Heat is On

Hey folks,

Temps have dropped here in NY, so I've turned my temp dial into the red for heat.

I notice that, when the car warms up to operating temp., with the temp. dial in the red, but with the vent fan off, the cabin starts to smell like warm antifreeze.

When I do turn on the vent fan to warm up the cabin, the smell goes away.

Any input on the what and why? I suspect a leak? I do see that there is a small amount of antifreeze leaking from the filler neck, where it attaches, by the thermostat.

BTW, I replaced my radiator and added fresh coolant about 1000 miles ago.

I would assume it's such a small amount seeping from the heater core that the fan dries it and it stops smelling.... Or you become used to it and just think you don't smell it. Mine did that for two years before it decided to let go and soak my right foot with warm coolant. When the end is near you will see it fog the window and the smell will be all the time.

It could be that the leaking fluid smell is getting into the cabin from the engine compartment. If the filler neck is cracked or isn't attached properly it could be leaking and either putting it back on correctly or replacing it would be all that is needed to stop that leak. (Best case)

You could also have a heater core leak If you find fluid on the floor of your passenger compartment or wetness behind the center console near where the dash meets the floor, you likely have a heater core leak.

That happened to me a few months ago. Replacing it requires you to remove the entire dashboard and just about everything off the front interior of the car to get to the core. It appears to be a full day's work or about $1000 for a shop job.

I was contemplating the ghetto fix of cutting through the firewall, replacing the core (a new core is only $50) and sealing it back up with tape and caulk. I was convinced not to go that way and took NitroPT's advice of using Moroso Ceramic Engine Seal. I got the OEM version from the manufacturer of the Moroso product but it was exactly the same stuff at the same price, the only reason I got that was because the shop had it in stock.

The procedure is written on the bottle and you need to follow it to a "T" but it worked like a charm and the leak is completely gone.

Here's my experience.

Fix the leak in the filler neck. I had same smell in the car when mine was leaking. Went away as soon as I replaced the thermostat and filler neck.

Thanks folks. After talking to Nitro and reading your posts, I just ordered a bottle of Moroso. I'll be doing that as well as replacing the leaking filler neck and thermostat, just for the sake of doing it.

There's no point in using the engine seal UNLESS replacing the filler neck doesn't cure the smell. Overkill is the word that comes to mind.
