Default Damaged SKIM wiring.

Hi all,

I have a PT cruiser 2.0 I'm using for parts and have stripped the interior out including the dashboard. I also started to cut back "branches" of redundant wiring loom, e.g the parts that come from the main loom that go to the power windows e.t.c Unfortunately I've cut something and now the immobiliser has activated. The engine would run for a couple of seconds and cut out, and now won't even turn over. It seems the SKIM module on the ignition switch is no longer reading the key. Can the wiring from the SMIM unit be traced back to the ECU in the engine bay? Should there be a live feed to the SKIM unit?

your damaged wire not allowing the engine to crank should be addressed and I'm not sure it has anything to do with the skim module.
since youre using this car for parts i don't understand why you would want it to run . i also dont understand why you must insist on cutting out branches of the wiring harness

If the SKIM unit can't detect the chip in the key it allows the engine to run for a couple of seconds before cutting out. After you try starting the engine a few times in this condition the ECU prevents the engine from even cranking over. As soon as the SKIM unit detects the chipped key it allows the engine to crank and start.

As well as using the PT for parts I'm planning on using it for demo derby type event. Years ago when cars were much simpler the whole loom would be removed and the engine rewired but on more modern cars the original loom is often left in place and redundant "branches" for non essential systems like power windows and lights are cut out and removed. Only about 20% of the original harness is actually needed. I didn't make this point before as I didn't think it was relevant.

Self preservation is built into the PT Cruiser as it knows when people are going to abuse it and it shuts down to prevent any damage.. Like a cattle going to slaughter house..

Doesn't the skim need the black box for the power door lock junk that lives under the dash in the center in order to function properly? my pt has neither power locks or the grey key. So I'm not positive. Reconnect the black rkem module that is above the center vents, but under the dash pad and I feel it may start

It was running fine without the central locking module under the dashboard cover, although some of the wiring is the same colour as the SKIM wiring so may be connected in some way.

Hi all,

I've found this link on a Neon forum, it has a pic of the SKIM wiring in the thread. Looks like of 4 wires, one goes to the PCM, two are live and one is an earth. I could be in business.

2GN.ORG :: View topic - wiring SKIM on a nonSKIM car: DONE thanks GraphiteSRT

All of this is very educational, I'm learning so much!
