Default Need some guidance...Mint condition dream cruiser just totaled

Hi all -

I am hoping someone can provide me with some guidance. We recently received a mint condition 2002 gold dream cruiser from my father-in-law (original owner) which was supposed to be a car for our new driving daughter.

Well....a couple of weeks ago, in the middle of the night, it was hit by a drunk driver and totaled. And, the driver was uninsured and we did not have collision coverage. Sad.

Anyway....while much of the car is in bad shape, other parts of the car are perfect and we are trying to figure out who/where might be interested in it. The engine has just 79000 and just received a major service to prevent the recurring issues around 100,000. It has brand new good all-season tires with less than 40 miles on them.

We are in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Any ideas? Is there a local group that might be interested? A particular junk yard that specializes in cruisers?

Thanks in advance and sorry if this is in the wrong sub-folder.

Welcome to the forum from Texas.

Sorry to hear about the Dream Cruiser, not the best way to get introduced. I don't have any information to help, although I'm sure someone will be along soon that can.

Thanks and true. Hopefully, the parts can find a good, caring home.

state farm covers me for a week on any car i buy, so if i had a bill of sale dated within 7 days of the accident it would be as if it were already insured.

or are you saying you had the car a while before that and it only had liability? i got screwed like this. i junked the car and learned to buy full coverage

or do you have homeowners insurance? they might cover it if it was just not yet registered

either way, glad your daughter wasn't in it (:

Agreed. Could be much worse. Unfortunately, we had the car for a while. No coverage. We did not get collision because for a teenage driver, we would havenpaid the full value of the car in 24 months.

Oh well. If anyone needs a good engine nd brand new tires, let me know.

Thanks for the kind messages.

Sorry to hear about your PT, but I'm glad you and yours are okay.

First, let's look at value. A 2002 Dream Cruiser is not worth much more than a 2002 PT Limited. Even for a clean one, you would be looking at around $2,000 to $2,750 where I live.

Next, no salvage yard I know of specializes in PT Cruisers. In fact, many yards feel they have too many of them. So you have done right by coming to this forum where people are still interested in these great little cars.

For enthusiasts, the 2002 Dream Cruiser only has a few unique parts for salvage. It's is basically a 2002 Limited Edition. The unique features include special 16 inch wheels, "turbo" bumper cover (even though it's not a turbo car), special badging, and a special white and gold interior. If you wanted to part yours out and sale the parts, these would be the ones of highest interest. These parts will fit on most 2001 thru 2005 models. The good fairly low-mileage engine and tranny also have value. But the engine will only work in 2001 and 2002 models. The 2003 and newer engines are not interchangeable with the older ones. The same is true with the PCM and TCM. They are 2001/2002 only.

Again, I'm glad you are okay and I hope you consider purchasing another PT Cruiser since they are at such bargain prices right now. A 2003/04/05 Dream Cruiser or GT with the turbo engine would likely open up a whole new part of the PT experience for you.

Thanks for the good information.

Looks like we will probably find a good charity to donate the Cruiser too. Appreciate the guidance.

In my state we have to have insurance. But some still get around it. But most policies have uninsured moterist on their policies. It has a high deductible but you can recover most of it.

danny the DUI driver didn't have it. it's much cheaper and more convenient just to drive around uninsured with no valid license if you like to drink and crash into things. when you look one of these people up you'll see $2000+ court fines that are unpaid for years and they never seem to care or go to jail. here uninsured motorist is mandatory, i think down by handy it's optional. it covers your/passengers medical bills though, not the car on liability(which i learned the hard way)
