Hi,
I am about to buy a used PT Cruiser. And I would like to know if there is anything specifically that you recommend me to check apart from the usual with all the cars. This is a 2006 PT Cruiser around 90000miles with engine 2.4L L4 DOHC 16V. And the private owner is asking $2500. I am very close to close the deal and a bit nervous... Thanks |

Check the front suspension. In particular, the lower control arm bushings, sway bar bushing and end links. Known areas of wear on the PTs. BUT, the MOST IMPORTANT thing to find out is if the timing belt has ever been changed or not. The recommended change is 100,000 mile and this one is pretty close. If it's never been done, then unless you're mechanically inclined, this will be anywhere from a $1,000 to $1,500 job at most shops. It's also recommended you replace the water pump and tensioner (which both should be included in the estimate) as well as the center motor mount. THAT will not be included. It's a tough job, so labor is what costs so much. That could be a reason the owner is selling it as they either don't want to pay for that, or don't want to fool with it. Inquire as to whether or not the trans fluid and filter have ever been changed too and check to make sure both cooling fans work. This is also the first year for the TIMP in the PTs, so be aware there COULD be possible electrical quirks from time to time. Some of the 06 models had them, some didn't. I'm sure some 06 owners can chime in.
