I saw these older posts. They say you need to tun the key on first, that does not make sense, I would like to have it installed with the smart key if possible, like the newer cars have.

above and beyond all electronics, without turning the key, the steering shaft is physically locked. new cars have electronically assisted power steering making the physical lock unnecessary

issue 2 is if the key is not in the run position, no amount of cranking will make it start

you could build one yourself if you were willing to sacrifice the steering lock and were able to program an arduino.
-i would use a "bluetooth shield" to sense my phone. once sensed, it would be programmed to unlock the car door, store a variable to allow the start button to activate.
-i would use a "relay shield" to control the wiring. when you press the button, the relay shield would provide power same as having the key set to run, i would also have it crank the car via a second relay during the first press of the run button. then on second button press, program it to kill the ignition power, wait 60 seconds, and then delete the variable it stored to detect the bluetooth so the car won't start for a stranger.

there's probably 100 different ideas for this. above would be mine, as it would be simple, fairly safe, and fairly secure. it would likely take 10x longer doing the wire than learning/doing the programming

there's a kit on ebay to do it and it includes clear instructions. i have it in my closet just have to install it. basically you defeat the interlock in the steering column by removing the lock cylinder and turning the position one forward with a screw driver. then you keep out the lock cylinder, and wire up and glue the start button in the place. you zip-tie the key to the column near the SKIM module to handshake the anti-theft.

then the remote start/passive keyless entry system is installed and wired in. the new modules key fob is the anti-theft device as you cant start the car without it. it acts in the same manner as new cars with keyless systems.
walk up to the car, it unlocks it. go inside the car, push in clutch/brake and push button, the module with crank the engine until the car starts.
