The base of my antenna is loose. The antenna is screwed on tight but the base thet it screws into is loose, and I am getting poor am radio reception. How do I tighten this?

It's been years since I touched the antenna (except for polishing) but if I remember correctly, the locking nut that secures the base to the fender has two notches on it. There's a special tool to tighten the locking nut but if your really careful, you can loosen or tighten that nut using a flat blade screwdriver.

First, take masking tape and cover the area all around the base. In case you slip with the screwdriver hopefully the tape will stop and scratches. The nut (like all of them) tightens in a clockwise rotation. Take the edge of the flathead screwdriver and place carefully into the notch and gently tap the handle of the screwdriver with your hand or very lite taps from a small hammer to push the locking nut around the base in a clockwise rotation. That will bring the base up towards the fender itself and tighten it all down. The antenna itself should be just screwed onto the base so you might want to take the antenna off before starting the job. Good luck.

One of the first mods I did was replace the antenna and bezel with chrome years and years ago.

I used snap ring pliers to tighten mine a few years ago. fits into the notches pretty good. Just be careful that you don't slip of the notched nut and scratch up your paint...
