Default Best option for third key

My new to me 2005 convertible has two working grey keys. I like to have extra keys for my cars so I want to get a third key. I did a search and read through previous posts. From what I have read and from my owners manual I understand I can program a third key since I have two working ones. However, I also read that you have to be careful who cuts the third key as the machine could possibly reprogram my original and then I no longer have two working keys to program the third. Any truth to this or is it urban legend? Is it best to get the chipped key from ebay and cut locally or buy the key at the place that cuts it? TIA for any advice.

Default Re: Best option for third key

You could take your ID (drivers license) and vehicle registration papers to a Chrysler dealership. They will then give you the ignition and PIN codes associated with that VIN.

You can call around and ask a keymaker/locksmith if they can cut a key based exclusively with the code. No need to have the original and a fresh key cut instead of duplicating the worn out spots of an old key.
