Default Gas Mileage

Ya know, my day turn bad when I checked my gas mileage. With new plugs, wires, air filter, etc, the very best I can get out of this thing (which has 75K miles and runs like a deer) is 19.5 around town and maybe 21.0 on the highway. My Corvette gets better gas mileage. I can't believe this four banger only gets 19/21......oh well dig alittle deeper at the pumps.

Interesting. I did a 250 mile round trip in mine after rebuilding the suspension. I had a tail wind for the drive out, and a head wind for the return. I kept to 70, and returned 24.6 mpg, and on severely worn out spark plugs as my tune up last weekend revealed. My butt dyno does feel like I've picked up a bit of power after replacing them, how much is anyone's guess. It just feels a bit more lively in throttle response.

If you get an OBD2 scanner that can calculate instantaneous gas mileage, you'll see that when the engine load is greater than 50%, the mileage drops like a rock. If you can get it above 40-45 mph where it shifts into high gear, the mileage goes from the teens into the 20's or 30's. You have to do a lot of "granny" driving with a lot of coasting, but you can get a city mpg into the mid 20's and a highway mileage into the high 20's.

Plus if you do the actual calculations of a fillup vs. odometer reading, the mpg's are about 1 to 2 mpg higher than what the instrument cluster shows depending on your driving, but in the end, it's actually a pretty powerful engine for the size of the car and you pay for it with poor gas mileage.

I drive 53 miles 1 way to work mostly highway. Setting the cruise between 68-70 mph I've been averaging 25.6 to 26.4 MPG, When I do more in town driving it averages about 23.5 mpg.

Next week i'll be hitting 165K on it

Mine got 21 driving like a teenager. 27 if i drove so slow it was painful. I did it for a week and then my check engine light came on.

What's your PSI in the tires look like? I had 44 in front and 40

in back. Try it for a tank and see how you do.

I get FMPG with my PT Cruiser

Fun Miles Per Gallon

Currently its low because we are getting temperatures up to around 112F so the AC is on from start to finish. best right now is only 19.5MPG averaged out.

It could be worse. I got 18mpg at my last fill up. That is mixed driving also not all just city. All city would probably be around 16.

I try to keep my shift points around 3000 rpm or less and average between 22 and 23 mpg with my turbo. Some days more, some days less depending on whether or not I actually have to use the turbo. Best I've ever gotten was 24.3 and that was driving all of the posted speed limits or less. You also have to keep in mind that these are heavy vehicles and not the most efficient aerodynamic design either.
