Default Help with post heater-core fallout

I replaced a blown heater core (2001 pt cruiser, non-turbo). All went well, and there was no more coolant smell.

However, there is another, strange, thick smell, almost an oil/grease smell now. I did get a small amount of oil on the evaporator core when cleaning things, but I cleaned the heck out of it and the hvac housing before reinstalling.

In trying to find the source, I removed the cabin air filter, and reached into the compartment above the blower fan, and there is a door there facing the engine. I pulled on it, and it came open and stayed open. Thereafter, the air flow through the vents was about 2 times as much, and a bit less stinky. What door is that? Is it supposed to hang open?

I also notice that no water seems to be coming out of the condensate drain, although I can feel cold air blowing out when the ac is on.

Sorry for the epic post.

The only thing I can ad is about the AC. When it is not very humid outside you will have very little condensation.
