has anyone ever swapped out the alternator to say a GM one wire to bypass having the stupid ecu controlling it?

i just dont like the ecu controlling something that can be self controlled, as it seems to be a somewhat of a common problem that the ecu fails in the department requiring a replacement ecu, PLUS the stock alternator is rather pricey imo.

this is the wrong car for you. mercedes benz and chrysler both designed and engineered the electrical system on this car. in my opinion, it's a quality grade above most domestic vehicles of the 90s.

a large variety ECUs have problems over time, no manufacturer is immune.

this is a solution to a non-existing problem.

domestic components are NOT pricey. try pricing out an AUDI or Mercedes benz alternator. then you can realize by comparison these are very low cost maintenance vehicles.

Not sure what if any real advantage to doing this would be? Maybe even more challenges and problems? There are far better options to upgrading the PT's generator but unless they are for a specific purpose..like I said??

at 276k my car was still on the original computer. i unhooked the battery and let the car run off the alternator. i unhooked the battery while the car was running. i even took it out running and stuck my battery in another vehicle to get a friend off the highway at 2am. i pretty much did everything they tell you not to do and i never had an issue. you're worrying for no reason.

you could do this i suppose:
EXTERNAL voltage regulator repair?

or just stick an alternator on there and wire it how you please. i rewired my ford and connected the voltage sensing wire to the starter solenoid where the key on power is distributed throughout the vehicle. i made the bracket to relocate it in only a couple hours. alternators are simple. if it makes your day, then go for it. seems like a waste of time to me though
