Default 2006 PT

Here are the issues: It all started with the rpms dropping to around 500 and the car acting like it was going to stall, then the rpms would go up to around 800 while sitting at a red light. So, I put the engine in neutral and reved it. Then, a strange noise came from or around the starter and white smoke that smells electrical came from the same area when the rpms reach approximately 1800.
So, thinking something was wrong with the starter, I replaced it. I then drove the car approximately five miles down the road and everything ran fine. I turned around and began the trip back when the same issues happened again twice. The first was at a red light about 2 miles from home. This time though, I noticed that the AC got warm when it happened. The second time was at the red light 200 yards from home. This time the AC got warm as well and the temp. gauge went high enough for the idiot light to come on.
When I got it back in the driveway, there was no water leak and I did not notice the engine any hotter than normal. I did not think to check the top hose to see if it was hot.
Please, any ideas would be appreciated.

AC compressor seizing, AC compressor clutch failure, or temperature sensor failure for the freon causing it to load up and seize.

I would check to see if the radiator fan is working properly. See if the radiator fan plug or wiring going to the plug is overheating and burning up causing the white smoke. If your radiator fan is not working properly it can affect the rpm's and the engine temperature. Has the radiator fan been replaced or is it the original radiator fan?

Some report white smoke and it's caused by the fan not cooling down the compressor whereas the compressor lets off R134a into the atmosphere to get rid of built up pressure.

Thank you all for your suggestions. It was a bad fan. Forty-five minutes and $140 and the car is running good. The only thing is that the AC is not very cold anymore. I'll charge it up in a couple of days. Again, Thanks.
