Default A/C compressor causing engine stumble

My 2005 PT (non turbo) a/c would be nice and cold and then the engine would stumble - causing the a/c to go warm. Today I noticed that when the a/c would go warm and engine stumble, I reved engine and got belt noise and a bit of smoke.
I assume the a/c compressor is locking up.
I hear no bearing noise. It happens after car has been sitting awhile.
- what would cause the compressor to act like this?

Is your radiator fan working properly?

Does it also happen at highway speeds or only city speeds?

Mainly happens at idle.
Should the fan have 2 speeds? How should I check?

With the engine cold, start the engine, turn the A/C on and see if the radiator fan comes on almost immediately.

Cold engine start / turn on A/C
- no fan movement
What do I check next?

Seems like good advice here:
AC Only Blows Cold While Moving....

First thing you need to do is unplug the radiator fan and manually apply 12 volts to both speeds..

If fan works on both speeds check the fan plug for bad contacts. If that is okay check the fan relays.

Let us know what you find out.

I tested the fan and it did not have both speeds working. Although I replaced it 5 years ago, I forgot it was covered under warranty. Exchanged for free - praise the Good Lord! New fan and now I have A/C again. Thanks to all for your help.
So the symptom was engine stumble with compressor locking up and warm air.
Installed new fan, now the A/C works as it should.

I had let out a bit of gas in testing. I used an A/C can from Advanced Auto with a gage. Here is a video.

Does the pressure look right? The cycle time was a bit longer after a 10 minute drive.

This is bound to start a debate, but not if any other member asks the same question, but what brand of fan was it?
