Default Ignition locking

So my daughter's ignition is locking on her '02 cruiser. I found a quick fix online where you tap the key with a hammer. It worked, but I would prefer to actually FIX it so we are not driving around with a hammer. is there a way to fix the current ignition or should I plan on replacing it? The steering wheel does turn, so from what I quickly read it seems to be the ignition. Thank you!

There's a piece on the end that breaks off sometimes. You may want to replace the lock cylinder and key.

No problem. If you do a search here, I'm sure you can find descriptions and MAYBE a photo or two. Seems like a lot of members here used photobucket for their photos and now photobucket wants about $400 a year for a membership. They deleted everyones photos. I guess to show they were serious.

This is just an example of a ignition switch and you can see the plastic piece at the end of it that sometimes break.

if the hammer trick is working, it's definitely the lock cylinder itself.

don't bend the key, but.... hitting it HARDER usually fixes it permanently

IMO, the hammer trick is temporary, as is graphite oil lubrication. DO plan on renewing the lock cylinder and tumblers ..I have seen these for $18 on up - depending on how much you are willing to overspend .
Best is the annual lubrication, which very few of us do !
