Default Looking for advice on PT with shot tranny

Hey guys and gals.

My 2007 PT Convertible has a shot tranny, according to the place I brought it to.
Guy says it needs 2600 dollars of repair/rebuilding.

it's obviously 10 years old, but only has 118, 000 miles. It's been a good ten years.
I'm not going to put 2600 bucks into the car.

My question is, should I try and sell it as is with no functioning tranny, or just junk it?

If there is another option that I'm not aware of, let me know.

Thanks, Pete

Well, don't junk it. If you're close to me, let me have it. I'll find a transmission for it and put it in.

Yeah. It's got to be from a 2007 or 2008 too. 2007 were the first year for VLP and I believe they changed it again in 2009 or so.

That leaves me out then. The newest PT I found in any of the junkyards I went to is an 06. Gee, thanks Todd.

Used is the way I would go. Try wwwCar-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market

Enter your local information and search I found many locally between $250- $450 on the site. I'd stay away from that $2600.

I live in Ft Lauderdale area.
I can get 100 bucks or so for junking it, so I just wouldn't give it away to someone for nothing.

I'll try that car-parts thing

Thanks

118,000 miles...unless you've already done the timing belt & water pump...you'll be dropping another $1500 soon.

To give an idea, my 2007 turbo convertible was listed for $500 on Craigslist, with a supposed busted transmission, missing front bumper, no title and an interior similar to a swamp. I convinced the girl (young unwed mother) selling it to get the title from her friends that gave her the car. And I gave her $1,000. With your car in good condition except for the bad tranny, I would expect it too is worth around $500 to $1,000 as is to the right buyer. I don't know about down south where you live, but the north Florida market seems similar to Arkansas. In good running condition, your vert would likely be worth around $2,500 gave or take $500.

I paid $450 for my transmission including freight. These late 41TE VLP transmission are still a little hard to come by. I would anticipate another $550 or more if I couldn't install it myself. But of course, I ended up not needing it.

If your timing belt has never been changed, you run an increasing risk of it breaking while going down the road if over 100,000 miles. The average cost to have a shop replace the timing belt with other timing components is around $1,500 depending on your location.

In summary, you have a vehicle worth somewhere around $2500. As is with a bad tranny, it's a $500 to $1,000 car if the right buyer comes along and you might have to set on it for a while until this buyer turns up. The car needs approx. $2500 in repairs including a timing belt if not already done. So if it needs the timing belt and if all the work must be done at a shop, you could foreseeably buy another PT vert just like yours but in good condition for what the repair bill would be.

If me and if couldn't do the work myself, I'd either sell the car now for a few hundred dollars for scrap, donate it to a charity that picks up cars for scrap. Or I'd run it as is a Craigslist and let it set in the back yard until the right buyer comes along. And instead of repairs, I'd just spend me money on another good running PT.
