Default 2005 PT Cruiser Won't Turn Over

First time poster. Car is a 2005 PT Cruiser, automatic, non-turbo.

Here's the story. Was in a slow-speed accident, which didn't set off the air bags and barely did anything to the front of the car. The car won't start or turn over using the key. I get no codes, only "DONE" when I cycle the key on/off 3 times. There is no red light (dot) on the dash, so I don't think it's my anti-theft. I can't find any blown fuses, and I can only get the car to turn over when I manually engage the relay under the hood after removing the plastic cover. It still won't start. I can hear the fuel pump running, so I know it's getting fuel. Any ideas on where to probe?

Tom

I would suggest you check to see if you have spark on all four cylinders.

Is your fuel pump only coming on for up to 3 seconds and then turning off? If your ASD circuit is not working properly due to the ignition timing not working properly it will turn off after 3 seconds.

If you are not getting spark I would pull the camshaft sensor off and see if the camshaft is turning.

By the way, welcome to the forum. You might want to introduce yourself on the welcome thread in the forum.

Thanks for the welcome.

I'm not getting a spark. The timing belt is turning when the starter engages.

Fuel pump is on while it's turning over because when I let up on the relay, it runs for a second or two and then turns off.

Car has less than 50K miles, so it has to be something simple.

i would suggest checking your battery. Check to see if it still is above 10.5 volts when you are cranking the starter. Check your battery cables.

I would suggest trying to start it in neutral. Something might have happen to your neutral safety switch (Transmission Range sensor).

We are going to do the simple diagnostics first.

After checking the battery as Steve said check around all the wire connectors. Also the ground connections especially the ones to the body beside the battery (G100) they get brittle and sometimes break.

Something could have been jarred loose completely or partially and not be making good contact.
Also unhooking the battery long enough for the pcm to reset might also help.

Common wiring diagram reference for helping diagnose the problem.

I agree with Azrak. The G100 area is the one I highly recommend you look at. It has a couple of smaller wires along with the large one that seem to get fragile over time. I think vapors from the battery take a toll over time. And it might have been hit just hard enough to break the connection.

Was the front end of the Pt Cruiser hit on the drivers side, passenger side or in the center?

I would check to make sure all the wires going to the starter are attached including the one from the ignition switch.

Thanks all. Battery is at 12.2. Won't start in Neutral. I put it in neutral and used the relay to turn it over....still wouldn't start.

Car was hit on the driver's side front.

Wiring appears to be good. Wires going to the starter are tight, all grounds are tight. I would think that even if it was a starter issue (or ignition switch issue), by bypassing the ignition switch, it would start when I engaged the starter via the relay. Is something going on in the ECM (or whatever it's called on the PT Cruiser?
