Default 08 PT coolant change

In the process of changing the coolant in my PT. The new stuff (50-50 G-05 / distilled water) has a golden almost clear color. The old stuff (same mix) that came out after 5 yrs, 40000 miles had a darkish kind of orange appearance. Is this "normal" ???

The G-05 you buy at the stores is yellow...kinda honey brown. If you buy it from Chrysler, I believe it is a different color...pinkish red.

This is what my coolant looked like when I changed it. I just bought the car so I have no idea how old it was.

Look familiar?

I recently had the cooling system flushed and refilled on my PT. I used the MOPAR HOAT 50/50 pre-mixed which now is sort of a pinkish-redish color, when it used to be more orange. If someone were to look in the coolant system and saw that, you could think there was a problem as it looks like rusty water, but it's actually ok. One would think that they could have picked a more attractive color than muck.

Yes, it's different stuff.

Most if not all PT Cruisers came with pink or orange HOAT antifreeze. Chrysler basically adopted the Dex-COOL antifreeze that GM has come up with. HOAT antifreeze is basically the same thing (ethylene glycol) as the old green antifreeze, but it uses different additives that supposedly add extra it's life. The problem is that those additives were not compatible with the additives in most of the old green stuff. When mixed together, you would get a suspended black precipitate much as the member posted above. This precipitate tended to settle and could clog up the radiator and other parts of the cooling system.

Modern name-brand antifreezes are not usually actual HOAT and are not the old green stuff either. It has different additives that are compatible with both HOAT and the old green stuff. And they just add coloring as so folks worried about the old HOAT/Green stuff problem will still buy their products. As an example, the yellow/green Long Life Prestone is just about the same chemically as the Orange Prestone. They are just packaged differently.

In summary, don't worry about the color of your antifreeze. If you don't know what coolant was used last time it was changed, simply flush the system first which you should likely do anyway. And then you can add which ever quality antifreeze you like. For me, I like the Long Life Prestone but switched to the orange Prestone because when you go to sell a PT, some folks want to check for orange antifreeze because some old hand told them it was a problem if it didn't have it.

Yes Humming birds like RED food coloring in the water.

ATF The red color is the result of dye that is added to the transmission fluid for identification.
