Default '05 Stuck in park

I have tried the search function but have not found anything like what I am looking for. From the amount of hits online this should have some discussion but maybe I just can't find the right key word(s)? In any case, my transaxle is stuck in park. It does not appear to be a shifter or cable problem. The cable has been disconnected at the shift lever on the trans. and it and the shifter work smoothly. It locks and unlocks just as it should with the key on and foot on brake. The lever at the trans. is stuck tight. Maybe 1/4" of movement after working it back and forth, but I don't want to break it.

A mechanic mentioned the TCM may be at fault but as far as I can tell, there is no TCM on a non-turbo '05, but is integrated into the PCM. The engine runs fine but the check engine light is on and the fuel gauge pegs full followed by empty (tank is full) None of these issues existed when parked. Car has been parked eight months, covered top and bottom. If this has been covered before a link to the thread would be appreciated.

first thing to do is to clean the batter cables.

then you might want to read up on a few of these. https://www.google.com/search?client...hift+interlock "shift interlock" is what you're looking for.

i misread your problem and posted something goofy so i edited it. ...a fuel gauge stuck on full is a grounding issue....which is what i read the first time

I appreciate the reply.
The fuel gauge issue doesn't worry me at this time, but I mentioned it in case it might be related to some sort of gremlin affecting the shifter. Perhaps the best way to ask this question is: should the shift lever on the transaxle be able to be moved when the cable is disconnected from it? Unless there is some electrical interlock inside the trans. this should be purely mechanical?

There is a "shift interlock cable". I think it runs from the ignition to the shifter. I'm pretty positive on this, but my PT was not automatic so I'm not familiar with it

this.... and start at the steering column cover (2 screws) -its far easier to remove than the center console. confirm that there is tension on the cable below the ignition and push on the yellow tab to disconnect the cable its self from the ign. that should by pass the shifter. last, beneath the battery tray is the shift arm, remove and shift trans with a socket wrench (it will shift w/o engine on or brake applied) to confirm trannys ok.
that was as far as I had to trouble shoot (the actual button on the shifter was gummed up) so IM not 100% sure but the cruise control/shifter release switch should be one in the same and is normally under the dash and is a simple button switch that rests on the brake lever . heck now that I say it... check that first....oops. the system in question prevents shifting the car unless the brake is depressed- I really doubt its the computer<imo

I think they are saying that the cable is disconnected at the trans.

Have you tried, setting the park brake, chock the tires, jack up the front and put it on stands, then try to move the lever? Doing this would take the possibility that it is in a bind out of the equation.

I appreciate the replies. The shift cable is disconnected from the arm on the transaxle. The arm at the trans. will not move, well maybe 1/4" or so after some careful prying. I have jacked up the front and the wheels are free to rotate, but no joy on moving it out of park. The nut on top of the shaft is just a vent for the trans. I too do not believe the problem is electrical but it acts like the parking pawl is rusted in place.

It is unfortunate this has happened. I have owned it since '06 and has been one of the most trouble free vehicles I have owned. It was treated to a new timing belt, water pump, cam and crank sensors, all Mopar parts, watts link and front struts just before it was put up.

Do you have any way of rocking the car forward and back to see if you can get the parking pawl unstuck if that is the problem?

As mykee says: can you push the car forward (or backward) enough to release the parking pawl? Is it parked on a grade? I have had situations where (if I didn't use the parking brake) the car rolls back enough to jam the pawl. It can be a bear to pop it out of park if that is the case.

I'm not sure if rocking the car has more effect than jacking it up but maybe so? I will give that a try this weekend with a helper. The car is fifty miles from home at my cottage so my ability to try the suggestions is a bit slow. Thanks again.
