Default Need some PT advise

Hi: I am a late comer to the forum and need some guidance on purchasing a GT Cruiser. I have owned two cruisers both 2001s. My first one, I purchased in 2004 with 50,000 miles and drove it for years until it was stolen and wrecked when it had 149,000m. I then purchased a second one similar milage about 5 years ago that was running fine until about 2 weeks ago when the trans started shifting hard on the downshifts when coming to a stop and then week or so later when engaging drive after sitting for a while it forward gears would not engage for a minute or two. Every one around here has told me the trans is shot need new one but to be frank the trans shop and the dealer really spent zero time looking at the car before making their pronouncements. I am not sure about the diagnosies but I am setting the old cruiser in garage until I get some time to fiddle with it myself.
Now this gets me to the my need for advise. While I certainly learn a bit about my cruiser or the years, I have not been part of the PT community, so I am not marinated in PT info.I am looking for a GT now and I am looking for some advise for which model years are good and if there any to avoid? I know the later ones had more power, earlier ones are better looking. Looks wise I am bit agnostic between the first and second series, I like the first, it's a more pure design but the second generation looks more modern. To make a long story short what do you guys advise.

I would suggest the 2005 Pt Cruiser GT based on all the threads here on this forum for the past 3 years. There are arguments for each of the years of the Pt Cruiser but if I buy another Pt Cruiser the 2005 is the year I would look for one. For me the 2nd Generation Pt Cruisers have more electrical problems and they are hard to diagnose. I have a 2007 & 2008 Pt Cruisers and the 2007 Pt Cruiser has had some electrical problems and still goes through a battery every 18 months.

The 2004 and 2005 PT GT's are likely the best. They have the power and the most features. Plus, there are just more accessories for the the 1st Gen (2001 thru 2005) PT's.

Here's the thread where I sold my 2005 GT. Look at the list of options and ad-ons. These are definitely some of the best PT's

FS: The "Handy" 2005 PT GT w/Stage 1 and Many Extras

Right now, there's a 2004 Dream Cruiser for sale on the forum:

For Sale - 04 Dream Cruiser Series 3 - 1 of 400

This car looks very nice but needs a new turbo installed which the seller already has. The 2004 Dream Cruiser is a 2004 GT with Silver and Blue two-tone paint, two-tone leather seats and Empire wheels. That would likely make a very nice car for someone.

You will find the 2004 Pt Cruiser has more complaints than the 2005 Pt Cruiser in the link below. This is why I recommend the 2005 Pt Cruisers.

I agree with Steve. IF I was going to get another PT GT, I'd look at an 05. Stay away from the 03. While I really enjoyed mine, if you have to replace the cooling fans, which are exclusive to the 03, you'll pay dearly. And that is if you can find them. That and the fact that it doesn't have the HP that the 04 and later models have.

According to Edmunds, the 2004 has a higher customer satisfaction rating than the 2005.

Recommending because your ONE personal favourite website says X is better, for anything let alone cars, is foolish. Therefore Handy is correct given that various websites indicate either an 04 or 05 have about the same customer satisfaction ratings.

How about how many 2004 versus 2005 Pt Cruiser threads on this forum? I have other websites but I don't understand where you got the impression that I had only one favorite website. Everyone has a right to post their opinion so are you trying to change my opinion of the 2005 Pt Cruiser? Sorry but I still like the 2005 Pt Cruiser better.
We can go in circles with all the websites out there. The link below says the consumer likes the 2005 Pt Cruiser more.

Exactly my point! I am glad you agree. 04 or 05, it really doesn't make a difference.

i think that's true, but only marginally. being that it's a bosch OEM part, it's the same price range as mercedes benz parts. keep in mind it's a variable speed drive unit, which gives an advantage of tighter control of engine temperatures.

with starting price points of all used models being mostly under $4000, I don't think anyone is entitled to be surprised or complain about a major repair or cost exceeding the 'totalling' value of the vehicle, given the fact that new individual parts will simply not devalue in the same way a complete car will. nor does the shop labor to perform repairs (in fact both of these costs will appreciate over time due to inflation)

second, the 03 just needs a computer upgrade and it's making the same power output as the 04 and 05.

my advice to the potential buyer is to see what's for sale around your area, and make a decision. if you're a baller, and know exactly what you want, then set your line out further and pay the cost to get everything you want.
