Default A/C problems

My a/c quit working again, took to a garage and said that it had dye on the drain tube for heater case, evaporator and accumulator. And they want $900 to fix it, is this something you can do your self? And if so are the directions in any kind of manual?

Thanks

Hey, yes it is something you can do yourself, however it's a big job. the job you can't usually do yourself is the evacuating and re-charging of the A/C system. The reason it's always expensive is if they'res a leaking evaporator, the entire dashboard has to be removed and that's always a big job.

the reason why your 'ac quit working again' seems suspicious. usually A/C systems are trouble free for about 5 years at least. a number of things can go wrong, but repeat failures can be caused by poor service procedures. i'd like to hear about any other info you have.

this is a really good website to see if you will have a fair cost for the repairs.

second opinions by another shop could be an option. however if the first shop was accurate in diagnostics, you would be wasting money to have another shop diagnose it.

if there is dye inside the drain tube, then your evaporator is leaking and needs replacement, and yest,it is a giant job, you have to remove the complete dash to replace the evap.., then the system needs to be evacuated and recharged.. advice,go to the dealer to purchase Orings if you need more than what comes with the evap, the after markets are a shade to fat and get shaved down when reattaching the hoses
