Default Towing a PT Cruiser

Hi, all. I have a 2006 PT Cruiser with a broken timing belt. I'm going to give it to my nephew, but to get it to him, I have to tow the Cruiser about 80 miles, almost all of it on a lightly traveled interstate. I have a BCP Adjustable Towing Bar, rated at 5000 lbs. Is it possible to hook the bar on the rear towing hooks and tow it backwards?

The PT is a front wheel drive car, it should be towed with the front end off the ground...or on a flatbed.

Thanks for the info, but I don't have access to a flatbed or towing dolly. What would happen if I towed it backwards with all four tires on the road?

If the car is an automatic you might cause transmission damage flat towing...

It would be really difficult to do that. If you have a toe hitch on the front of the car, you could tow it forwards with all four wheels on the ground because the front wheels would track. But it will not work towing backwards because the car can't track backwards.

Used to, you could simply tie a chain or tow strap and pull the car while someone stayed in it to steer and use the brakes. But today, most states at a minimum, make you put a pipe over the chain to keep the car being towed from running into the one towing it. This often causes bumper damage to both cars and it not worth doing.

Other than a trailer or roll-back truck, the best way to tow a vehicle today is a dolly as long as you already have a truck with a tow hitch. You can rent a dolly pretty cheaply at U-haul. That's what I would do.

If you answered “yes” then parts car is a really good idea.
