Cool Gear shifter has been tight when changing positions and is now broken car won't start

Hi! Obviously I'm a newbie! My 2008 PT won't start and I have a feeling it's not serious but I'm a woman and don't want to be hit on the head! Plus, even worse, the car now will not start and I need my SNEAKERS! Over the last couple of days, I've noticed that my gear shifter in my automatic PT has been getting very tight when switching from park to all other gears and vice Vera's back into park. This morning I went out to the car and it wouldn't start at all. (Battery is 4 mos. old and electrical system is fine). I then tried the gear shifter as I remember having a problem with a Jeep I had back in the 90's that I'd sometimes have to rock it and it would start. Much to my surprise, the shifter very very easily went from park to D2 and back! Does anyone know what this could be and how in depth of a project is it? If it's easy enough, I might just try my hand at it myself unless you feel otherwise. Just really needs my sneaks back( Thanks in advance, Dee

Sounds like the shift cable was binding, but now is broken.
There are a couple of users on site that have replaced thiers..and a few YouTube videos.

I had a Dodge Caravan that did the same thing... Had to replace the shift cable. Turns it had been installed wrong and was binding.

Welcome to the forum from Texas. Hate to hear about the problem with your Cruiser and your sneaks! If it is the cable and you have some skills, you can do this.

Where are you located, someone may know of some good reputable help close to you if needed.

Just to add to what the other's said:

Automatic transmissions have a "neutral safety switch", which in your case is a "neutral safety switch / range sensor", located inside the transmission. This switch makes sure the transmission is in either Park or Neutral before it allows the starter to start the engine. If the cable broke, the transmission may not be in Park, and that could be why it will not start.

Also, I would recommend making sure the parking brake is firmly set, as the transmission may not be in Park.
