Default 2002 PT Cruiser Limited, what next...

Purchase this beauty few days ago.
Per Vin check mostly all info. seems to be
correct.
95K. miles, hard to believe but what is on the the speedo.
Drove for few days, seem like 99% solid.
No issues, except very slight body vibration.
My question would be mechanical priorities to bring
this PT to reliable state.
From what I read so far parts replacement should be
************************************************** **
Changed timing belt, w/pump and tensioners. Replace Radiator, Starter, Alternator. Wheel bearings, Make sure you get the tapered bearings over the ball bearings.

What would be members advice, please add if I overlook something.

Thank You.

Jack.

If it's never been done the timing belt kit is just about do. My owner's manual suggests it be done at 102,000 miles. That's not written in stone, but, between now and 102 thousand would be a good idea, along with a full radiator flush, thermostat, etc. Have the serpentine and other belt checked. Center motor mount replaced as P.M. Perhaps, a good tune-up and oil change. Have your mech go over the rest of the car and make suggestions.

Enjoy your Cruiser!

I just put in a turbo Airtex water pump on my N/A 2007 Pt Cruiser when I changed my timing belt recently. I don't recommend a timing belt kit as there is always a different preferred brand for some of the components.

There are several reasons to look at an Airtex water pump. Improved casting over other brands including OEM, less frictional fluid drag, timken bearing and seal. Proven engineering design to lower the chances of high RPM cavitation and improved water flow volume. This turbo water pump fits my Pt Cruiser.

Welcome to the forum from the great sovereign state of Arkansas!

As already mentioned, do the timing belt job first. My choice is a timing kit from Gates. The best price will likely either be Rock Auto or Amazon. Your 2002 will use the older style "grenade pin" tensioner. That's good. There's little advantage to the 2003 and up tensioner and the 2001/2002 tentioner is much easier to install because there's no adjustment. Do the plug wires too if they've never been done. The plug wires on the early PT's are kind'a crappy and can make the engine run rough.

Overall, your 2002 PT is an "early PT". While we says it's a 1st Gen PT (2001 thru 2002) based on looks, the 2001/2002 PT's have some important difference in the engines and PCM's (computers) of the later models.

For other modes and things to fix and/or add to your 2002 PT, here's a PARTIAL list of everything i did to my 2001 PT. Some are repairs and many are mods. The best stuff is in bold:

Be careful of the Gates pump. One member had them fail after aprox. 14 months. he was upset he had to take it apart again after 10K miles.
Gates pump failed in the link below.

Yes. And there's horror stories about Airtex all over the internet. The truth is that it's always possible to get a bad pump even from a premium brand. But since you can have Gates quality for only slightly more than the discount brand, Airtex, that's the way I'd go. While no brand can claim no failures, a quality brand such as Gates is till better assurance.

But I will say that Airtex seems to be getting better. The only problem is that they outsource from several different Chinese factories. So it is going to be hard to say if the Airtex pump you used last year will be the same as the one you buy today.

Like with most auto parts, we all have our preferences and our pet brands. But I've found gates to be one of the best when I can get it. It's a nice kit too with everything you need, all gaskets and even a sticker to put under the hood showing when the timing belt job was done.

What? No link to back your story? You are discounting a member of this forum with his problem with Gates water pump?
